Product description

Bob Dylan's thirty-fifth studio album, Tempest, is a profound and hauntingly dark masterpiece, released on 10 September 2012 by Columbia Records. This ten-track collection is a testament to Dylan's unwavering creative genius, featuring songs that are both deeply personal and universally relatable. From the ferocious 'Pay in Blood' to the poignant 'Roll on John', Tempest is an album that showcases Dylan's unique ability to craft songs that are both poetic and unflinchingly honest.

Recorded at Jackson Browne's Groove Masters Studios in Santa Monica, California, Tempest is a work of unbridled passion and intensity, with Dylan's distinctive voice and lyrical prowess taking centre stage. The album's themes of love, mortality, and social commentary are woven together with Dylan's characteristic wit and nuance, making for a listening experience that is both deeply rewarding and unsettling.

With its eclectic blend of folk rock, folk, singer-songwriter, roots rock, and country rock influences, Tempest is an album that defies easy categorisation. Instead, it stands as a powerful testament to Dylan's status as a visionary artist, one who continues to push the boundaries of his craft with each new release. At 68 minutes long, Tempest is an album that demands to be savoured and absorbed, its complex textures and themes revealing new depths and insights with each successive listen. As a work of art, Tempest is a triumph, a fitting addition to Dylan's illustrious discography and a reminder of his enduring status as one of the most innovative and compelling musicians of our time.

  • Warped Vinyl Disappointment

    4 out of 5 stars

Both vinyls in my copy are warped like bowls, which is really disappointing. On a brighter note, the second copy I got is a bit less warped, so it plays way better.

  • Dylan's Timeless Tempest Triumphs

    5 out of 5 stars
    csneicroekiOctober 16, 2025United States🇺🇸

Tempest kicks off with a quirky little tune that feels oddly out of sync and timeless ... kind of like the music that drifted from the worn-out movie speakers right before the Saturday matinee. But if you think about it, the whole album is like this old, flickering black-and-white film, warning us from a past era, delivered by a cliffhanger hero we don't take seriously enough these days, and we should, because even though his words are framed by a setting sun, the unexpected gravity of his songs is just as impactful. Dylan pulls from the last four decades, not so much taking stylistic detours, but revisiting and challenging musical ideas of the past, making them sound more significant with his unique perspective. Nowhere is this more obvious than in his vintage Tattoo You era take on “Pay In Blood,” a track whose lyrics he delivers with a gentle spit, a song that practically demands the swaying backup singers to sweeten the old man’s soulful moves, and ease his ache. Tempest is a haunting collection of musical visions, commentary, misfortune, memories, and disillusions ... laid out like a series of paintings from the Lewis Carroll book, “Through the Looking Glass,” all neatly lined up, only to be rearranged right before your eyes, casting a hypnotic spell that will have you shaking your head in disbelief while searching for a chair to contain the pounding of your heart as you realize that Dylan’s still out there with his amphetamine fueled visionary dexterity intact. Even if we've been distracted from time to time after all these years, Tempest leaves little doubt that his Bob-ness, the eternal watchman, is still at the top of his game. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve gotta put my hands in my back pockets, Betty Davis style, and stand here staring as this record spins ‘round and ‘round once more.
