Definitely not as boring as Saved, but this album isn't fantastic either. There's still that religious undertone, but the lyrics are more Dylan-like, and the music has a better range. Lyrically, "Every Grain of Sand" stands out, it's a real comeback. "The Groom's Still Waiting at The alter" is another strong track, a full-on Rock and Roll return.
Back in the day, I'd often spin Bob Dylan's albums... you know, like Saved and Slow Train, all the time. I recall finishing up a long hike one evening, it was already dark out. My phone had been playing albums and this one started up as I was trudging up the final hill. I'd never given it a listen before. I just thought it was an incredible set of tunes. It's a fantastic album.
Don't sleep on this album! Standout songs include "Shot of Love", "Heart of Mine", "In the Summertime" and, of course, one of Dylan's finest, the eternal "Every Grain of Sand".
Though this album isn't from Dylan's peak popularity time, I still find many of the tracks quite pleasant. I don't believe any of his Christian period albums are exactly terrible.
In my opinion, Bob Dylan's 1981 album is truly excellent and sounds fantastic. I'd even go as far to say it's one of his top 10 albums. The recording, production, and pressing are all top-notch.
