In my opinion, this pressing sounds quite decent. The record itself is rather thin, and the label doesn't seem to be of high quality to me either, but the cover, at least on mine, was made from a pretty sturdy material (kind of like cardboard), which was a pleasant surprise for a record from this time. The sound is quite good, maybe a bit lacking in depth (I thought it could use a bit more bass, but that's just my personal preference). I'm sure there are better pressings out there, but I reckon this one is pretty good if you come across it.
My jacket sports all the characteristics of this particular edition. It features the 'MCA RECORDS' text on the front and the disclaimer on the back, right above John's image: 'MCA-2017 (FORMERLY 113298) All selections previously released on UNI album number 93135 entitled HONKY CHATEAU'. My copy also has a white sticker with '113298' on the fold-over, just like the Elton John - Honky Château version. Additionally, the runouts and labels on the vinyl match that version perfectly. I reckon this might be a transitional piece from UNI to MCA, where they still had leftover vinyl stock but had switched to the new jackets with MCA details. I initially thought it might be a mismatched vinyl and sleeve scenario, but that sticker on the jacket that matches the runouts makes me think otherwise.
Incredible sounding record of another one of Elton's early 1970's classics. The moment 'Honky Cat' gets going, you just know you're in for an auditory delight. Fantastic...
Got it today (3/24/2023). Amazing sound! The low end is way more "snappy" compared to my old 1972 copy. This is an AWESOME album!
In line with other feedback, this pressing/mastering is absolutely stunning, with an incredible soundstage, dynamics, and a full frequency range. Nigel Olsson's drums are powerful, in the best way possible. The mids and highs are excellent, with all the sparkle you could ask for on the cymbals, and so on. Not entirely sure who mastered these, but they've done a brilliant job. I've listened to "Rocket Man" countless times, but never like this. Truly outstanding. I can't picture finding another mastering/pressing that tops this one.
