Being relatively new to Elton John's discography, aside from his biggest hits, I must say this album has been quite the revelation. Despite its reputation for sounding outdated, I found it to be surprisingly high in quality. "This Town" kicks things off with a fantastic synth-heavy start, full of energy and drive. "Cry to Heaven" and "Shoot Down the Moon" are standout tracks for me, with the latter being one of the best collaborations between Elton and Taupin I've come across. "Nikita" and "Wrap Her Up" are quintessential 80s cheese, but they're so enjoyable to listen to. "Satellite" is another great synth-heavy track, though it's a bit more experimental. The album does have its low points, though. "Candy by the Pound" is probably the weakest Elton song I've heard on an album so far. It should've been swapped out for "Act of War.
A close pal of mine gave this to me as a present, and I absolutely adore that album. The vocals are fantastic, not just Elton's, but also Sister Sledge's, George Michael's, and more. Plus, there's a cameo from Roger Taylor and John Deacon (Queen's drummer and bassist). The lyrics are pure gold too.
