Recorded on April 19th, 1964, at the prestigious Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, this album is a testament to Mingus' innovative spirit and his ability to blend various jazz genres seamlessly.

  • Jazz Concert Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    hou_rufoo9 January 2026United Kingdom🇬🇧

This concert is absolutely phenomenal, showcasing some of my all-time favorite jazz performances by one of my top touring bands. Let me share some interesting technical details and trivia with you: • Just like others have mentioned, "So Long, Eric" - the first real track that spans across A2 & B1 - is mistakenly labeled as "Goodbye, Pork Pie Hat", which is a completely different Mingus piece. • "So Long, Eric" served as a sort of theme song during their 1964 European tour, performed and recorded numerous times. It was dedicated to Eric Dolphy, who chose to remain in Europe after the tour, much to Mingus' personal dismay. You can actually hear Mingus expressing how much he'll miss Dolphy on the recording in Sweden, and there's footage of this on platforms like YouTube. • The version of "So Long, Eric" on this recording is from a different performance a couple of nights prior, featuring trumpeter Johnny Coles, who unfortunately collapsed later that same night. All the other tracks are from the April 19th Paris gig and don't include Coles. • This 1977 Japanese pressing comes with the little "SJ Seal of Approval" rosette on the Obi strip - a recognition given to one release per monthly issue of the Japanese Jazz magazine Swing Journal. As I said, this is an amazing issue of a legendary concert - I highly recommend you give it a listen!

  • Mingus Masterpiece with Dolphy

    5 out of 5 stars
    zxagdobploxe24 April 2025United States🇺🇸

The first Mingus album I ever listened to was this one, and it completely transformed my perspective. This fantastic album showcases the incredible lineup of Eric Dolphy, Jaki Byard, Clifford Jordan, and Dannie Richmond that Mingus took on his European tour. Sadly, Dolphy passed away not long after, leaving a massive void in the music world. Even just for the extended track of Good Bye Pork Pie Hat, this album is a must-have. It's an essential addition for any jazz enthusiast.

  • Eric Dolphy's Stellar Performance

    5 out of 5 stars

Wow, what an amazing discovery, definitely one of my top picks!!! So many incredible stars all together. It's truly sad that Eric Dolphy passed away just a few months after this fantastic performance.
