Product Description

Charles Mingus, the legendary bassist, composer, and bandleader, delivers a captivating journey through the diverse landscapes of jazz on his 1963 album "East Coasting." This album, released under Bethlehem Records, is a testament to Mingus's versatility and mastery of various jazz genres, including hard bop, bebop, free jazz, and cool jazz.

"East Coasting" is a concise yet powerful collection of six tracks, each offering a unique blend of Mingus's signature bass lines, intricate compositions, and dynamic performances. The album opens with "Memories of You," a soulful and introspective piece that sets the tone for the journey ahead. "East Coasting" and "West Coast Ghost" showcase Mingus's ability to blend different jazz styles, creating a rich tapestry of sound that is both complex and accessible.

The album also features a tribute to the great jazz singer and civil rights activist, Billie Holiday, with the track "Celia." This poignant piece is a beautiful homage to Holiday's legacy and a testament to Mingus's respect for the jazz tradition. "Conversation" and "Fifty-First Street Blues" round out the album, offering a mix of lively improvisation and soulful melodies that highlight the talents of Mingus and his bandmates.

With a runtime of just under 40 minutes, "East Coasting" is a tight and focused album that showcases Charles Mingus at the height of his powers. Whether you're a longtime fan of jazz or a newcomer to the genre, this album is a must-listen that offers a glimpse into the mind of one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time.

  • 1957 Re-Release Sounds Decent

    4 out of 5 stars
    emjesa29 December 2025United States🇺🇸

Likely due to the 1957 version being in mono, the initial recording probably wasn't top-notch. Frankly, I reckon this re-release sounds pretty decent.

  • Awful Pressing, Great Album

    3 out of 5 stars
    sbaqqozedk23 September 2025United States🇺🇸

This pressing was awful. The surface noise was incredibly loud. I had to send it back, and I rarely do that after 40 years of collecting records. I own the 180gram version - same release date, same catalog number, everything identical to this one. I'm starting to think there might be a mistake here. WaxTime really let me down this time. I'm deducting two stars because of the pressing problems, but this is clearly a five-star album.

  • Fantastic Mingus Track Addition

    5 out of 5 stars
    9xpewyqutxad4 July 2025United States🇺🇸

This is a fantastic (crisp and hushed) sounding copy of one of my all-time favorite Mingus tracks. Incredible new addition to the Bethlehem label.

  • Mingus Mastery in Perfect Pressing

    5 out of 5 stars
    iluqpvoyh23 June 2025United States🇺🇸

Fantastic record pressing. Absolutely silent background and perfectly balanced sound. Each time I listen to Mingus, I'm amazed by his genius. He's a true titan of music. Every note is purposeful, brimming with emotion and fully realized. This is a classic Mingus album, and you can't go wrong with this pressing.

  • Static Brush Comparison

    5 out of 5 stars
    uxpelrmakk4 June 2025United States🇺🇸

Was looking for a brush to get rid of static and dust. Seems promising. Has anyone used this compared to the 2014 Pure Pleasure model?
