Likely due to the original 1957 release being in mono—the recording probably wasn't top-notch from the start. Frankly, I reckon this reissue sounds pretty decent.
This pressing was absolutely dreadful. The surface noise was incredibly loud. I had to send it back, and I rarely do that after 40 years of collecting records. I own the 180gram version - same date, same catalog number, same everything as this one. I'm questioning if this listing is accurate. WaxTime really let me down this time. I'm deducting two stars because of the pressing problems, but this is clearly a five-star album.
Great (clear and hushed) sounding copy of one of my all-time favorite Mingus tracks. Fantastic new addition to the Bethlehem label.
Nice edit. The audio is crisp and the instruments are distinct. It's a tad quiet though. Comes with a Spanish version and an inner plastic sleeve.
While others have eloquently discussed the music (which is fantastic), I'll focus on the pressing itself. The addition of alternate takes, originally from a CD release, suggests this LP is sourced from a digital or CD version. However, it appears to be officially licensed, so it's not one of those questionable European public domain releases. Regardless, it sounds fantastic, and that's what truly matters. I repeatedly return to this album for the incredible trombone solo in "Memories Of You," and it delivers every time. The sound is rich, and the pressing is perfectly silent. For the price (I paid around 12 euros for mine), it's an unbeatable deal in my opinion. The only downside is the "includes bonus tracks" text on the front cover, which detracts from an otherwise iconic and beautiful design. P.S.: The bonus tracks/alternate takes seem to be mislabeled (or at least they are on my copy): "Memories Of You (Alternate Take 3)" is actually on side A, and the alternate take of "East Coasting" is on side B.
