  • Decent Mono Reissue

    4 out of 5 stars
    ithedo29 December 2025United States🇺🇸

Likely due to the original 1957 release being in mono—the recording probably wasn't top-notch from the start. Frankly, I reckon this reissue sounds pretty decent.

  • Dreadful Pressing, Great Album

    3 out of 5 stars
    jrekfimubx22 June 2025United States🇺🇸

This pressing was absolutely dreadful. The surface noise was incredibly loud. I had to send it back, and I rarely do that after 40 years of collecting records. I own the 180gram version - same date, same catalog number, same everything as this one. I'm questioning if this listing is accurate. WaxTime really let me down this time. I'm deducting two stars because of the pressing problems, but this is clearly a five-star album.

  • Mingus Track on Bethlehem

    5 out of 5 stars
    7zhivkgihref28 April 2025United States🇺🇸

Great (clear and hushed) sounding copy of one of my all-time favorite Mingus tracks. Fantastic new addition to the Bethlehem label.

  • Crisp Edit, Quiet, Includes Spanish

    4 out of 5 stars
    DatdqGayj15 March 2025United States🇺🇸

Nice edit. The audio is crisp and the instruments are distinct. It's a tad quiet though. Comes with a Spanish version and an inner plastic sleeve.

  • Great Sound, Mislabelled Tracks

    4 out of 5 stars
    Zegefahiw20 July 2024United States🇺🇸

While others have eloquently discussed the music (which is fantastic), I'll focus on the pressing itself. The addition of alternate takes, originally from a CD release, suggests this LP is sourced from a digital or CD version. However, it appears to be officially licensed, so it's not one of those questionable European public domain releases. Regardless, it sounds fantastic, and that's what truly matters. I repeatedly return to this album for the incredible trombone solo in "Memories Of You," and it delivers every time. The sound is rich, and the pressing is perfectly silent. For the price (I paid around 12 euros for mine), it's an unbeatable deal in my opinion. The only downside is the "includes bonus tracks" text on the front cover, which detracts from an otherwise iconic and beautiful design. P.S.: The bonus tracks/alternate takes seem to be mislabeled (or at least they are on my copy): "Memories Of You (Alternate Take 3)" is actually on side A, and the alternate take of "East Coasting" is on side B.

About Charles Mingus

Charles Mingus, a titan of jazz, was an American double bassist, composer, and bandleader whose innovative spirit and emotional depth left an indelible mark on the genre. Born in 1922, Mingus was a force of nature, blending hard bop, bebop, cool jazz, and even free jazz into his unique sound. His music was a raw, passionate expression of his experiences and emotions, making each piece a profound journey. As a bandleader, he brought together some of the most talented musicians of his time, creating ensembles that were as dynamic and unpredictable as Mingus himself. His compositions, known for their complexity and emotional resonance, continue to inspire and challenge musicians and fans alike. Mingus' legacy endures not just in his recordings, but in the very fabric of jazz itself.
