Charles Mingus’ “The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady” is, without a doubt, a jazz classic that has stood the test of time, offering an enthralling exploration of music that continues to captivate listeners. This enduring 1963 album showcases Mingus’ innovative brilliance and stands as a pivotal piece in jazz history. The 2021 reissue is, no question, a feast for the senses, particularly for those who appreciate high-fidelity audio. From the very first note, it's clear that this reissue has been painstakingly remastered to reveal the intricate details and profound beauty of Mingus’ compositions. The sound is remarkably crisp and precise, as though you're hearing the music in its most authentic state. The instruments' presence is nothing short of astonishing. From the sultry saxophones to the throbbing double basses, each sound finds its perfect place in the sonic tapestry, crafting an immersive listening experience. It's as if you're present in the studio during the recording sessions, so vivid and lifelike is the sound. What truly stands out in this reissue is its capacity to capture the dynamics and subtle intricacies of the original recordings. You can sense the fervor and skill of the musicians as they traverse the various movements of this work. The subtle blend of classical, jazz, and avant-garde elements in this piece is magnified by the superb audio quality. Beyond the exceptional sound quality, the packaging and presentation of this reissue are also commendable. It reflects a reverence for Mingus’ legacy and a commitment to preserving his music. The included materials and artwork enrich the overall experience and offer valuable context about the album’s history. In essence, the audiophile reissue of Charles Mingus’ “The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady” from 2021 delivers a breathtaking sound experience that highlights the magic of this timeless jazz album in all its glory. It’s a homage to Mingus’ artistic legacy and a must-own for any music enthusiast seeking to experience the essence of jazz in its purest form.
I stumbled upon this record for just 16 euros at a second-hand shop. The cover's a bit worn, but the vinyl itself is in nearly flawless condition. As it turns out, this is the best-sounding version of „The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady“ I've ever come across – it even outshines the more expensive „from the original tapes“ and supposedly „all analogue“ 2019 reissue. Either the seller had no idea what they were selling or I got incredibly lucky. Regardless, this is a true hidden treasure for Mingus fans who can't justify the cost of an original 60s pressing in good condition. That being said, for comparison's sake, this German 1985 DMM pressing makes the 2019 Impulse! reissue sound like a bootleg or a poorly digitized fake. The 1985 DMM will remain my favorite version of this classic album until I find an ex/nm original that doesn't break the bank – which, let's be honest, probably won't happen anytime soon. So, this version is „it“ for me & my collection. If you're on the hunt for a great-sounding and still affordable pressing of this LP, grab the 85 German DMM. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. In the meantime, I'll be listing my (supposedly) mint 2019 reissue for sale :)
No need to stress about dropping $150+ on an original. This reissue is really really great. It's got a huge soundstage and packs a punch.
The sound quality of this pressing is fantastic and it's sourced from the original master tape.
Never would've guessed this vinyl was mastered by Rainbo Records. The audio quality is absolutely stunning!
