  • Mingus' Final Touch

    3 out of 5 stars
    oodwjauhe14 April 2025United States🇺🇸

While Mingus couldn't play on this album due to the ailment that would ultimately claim his life, his distinctive thematic and compositional touch is still evident throughout. I personally prefer side 2 over side 1, as the latter kicks off with a 30-minute track that feels a tad disjointed. Side 2, however, offers three more conventionally structured pieces that, in my view, are far more compelling than the lone track on side 1. The sound quality is quite decent for an Atlantic record, and this Japanese pressing was impressively clean, with no noticeable flaws.

While Mingus couldn't contribute to this album due to the ailment that ultimately claimed his life, his distinctive thematic and compositional touch is still evident throughout. I personally prefer side 2 over side 1, as the latter kicks off with a 30-minute track that feels a tad disjointed. Side 2, however, offers three more conventionally structured pieces that, in my view, outshine the lone track on side 1. The audio quality is decent for an Atlantic record, and this Japanese pressing is notably clean, with no discernible flaws.

  • Long Sides, Congested Sound

    3 out of 5 stars
    naplahubo5 July 2024United States🇺🇸

While tuning into the Canadian pressing of this KSD8803, I'm getting a sense that the sound is a bit congested or constrained, not quite sharp and distinct. Then I spot the duration per side. 30 minutes on side A and 25 on side B. I've never come across such lengthy times per side on a vinyl record. This really should've been a double album. So, the question is, would longer durations compromise the sound quality? I recall those old K-Tel records that would cram in 10 tracks per side, yet still only hit around 20 minutes, and they didn't sound all that impressive. Not exactly the same scenario, but it got me pondering. I've just never seen 30 minutes on one side of an LP before.

While tuning into the Canadian pressing of this KSD8803, I couldn't help but feel like the sound was a bit congested, not as crisp and distinct as I'd like. Then, I spotted the duration per side - 30 minutes on side A and 25 on side B. I've never come across such lengthy times per side on a vinyl record. It really should've been a double album. So, I wonder, would having longer durations compromise the sound quality? I recall those old K-Tel records that crammed in about 10 songs per side, yet each side only lasted around 20 minutes, and they didn't exactly sound fantastic. It's not exactly the same situation, but it got me pondering. I've just never encountered a side that goes up to 30 minutes before.

  • Mingus' Influence Shines

    3 out of 5 stars
    iednpeuli22 April 2024United States🇺🇸

Despite Mingus not being able to play on this album due to the sickness that unfortunately led to his passing, his influence on the themes and compositions is clearly noticeable. I personally enjoy side 2 more than side 1, which has a 30 minute opening song that feels a bit disjointed. The second side has 3 more classically structured pieces that, in my view, are much more compelling than the single track on side 1. The audio quality is decent for an Atlantic record and this Japanese version was clean with no imperfections.
