Incredible pressing! Enjoyed it with TR Massimo Nero, TRA9S, and Figaro. Absolutely fantastic!!!
The price of admission is more than justified for obtaining an impeccable master of the complete version of "She spoke...". The other tracks are also excellent. Irrespective of whether these songs had been previously released as bootlegs, the mastering and sound quality on this CD render that irrelevant.

Just as the title suggests, this compilation is a gathering of "Old Friends," or as Prince frequently refers to his songs, his offspring. Judging by the gloomy expression on his face on the cover and the chosen tracks - all melancholic and mostly pessimistic - it's evident that Prince released these tracks merely to uphold his agreement with Warner Bros. True to his nature, Prince picked songs that were, for the most part, readily available on bootleg - not that he necessarily endorsed bootlegs, but this way he knew his most devoted fans wouldn't purchase the disc because a) they didn't want to give their money to Warner and b) they already owned copies of the songs, even if just on bootleg. Oddly, the one track that did make it into the compilation was "5 Women" - a song Prince penned for Joe Cocker and which Cocker featured on his 1992 album "Night Calls" - peculiar because this is one of the few songs that was highly sought after by many Prince enthusiasts but (at the time) was quite difficult to obtain. Considering that, it almost made "The Vault" a catch-22 for hardcore Prince fans - stuck between a rock and a hard place, so to speak, whether they bought it and handed over cash to WB or didn't and missed out on "5 Women," something they had been longing to get for years.
I must say, the quality of this release really took me by surprise. I wish they'd put the same effort into Rainbow Children...
