Upon comparing the original 2004 promo pressing with the new official reissue, the first thing I noticed was that the promo pressing is louder and has a crisper sound. I'll be keeping my old company sleeve promo copy, as it just sounds better on my setup.
Without a doubt, this is my least favorite Prince album. The mix of jazz/fusion muzak and those desperate attempts at hip-hop dance tracks, combined with the shallow and predictable lyrics, make it hard for me to find anything enjoyable here. The lyrics, as I mentioned, are quite predictable. You can pretty much figure out each song's message just from the title; for example, 'Dear Mr. Man' is all about writing a letter to authority figures; 'A Million Days' is about waiting for a lover; 'Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance' might be the most interesting lyrically, but it's a stretch to say it matches Prince's usual quality. Musically, it's incredibly bland. Jazz fusion worked pretty well in 'The Rainbow Children', but here tracks like 'What Do U Want Me 2 Do?' and 'On The Couch' sound like background music for a weather report. But the worst part is 'Life O' The Party', a dance song that makes me sick. The female vocalist's opening line, 'This is the life o' the...PAWTEH, We gonna do it right', already makes me cringe. The lyrics are truly awful and bland, I'm almost embarrassed for Prince... 'We gonna have us a party, All r welcome 2, We ain't down with nobody, That don't party like we do'... that's all I can say about it. What confuses me the most is that during this time, Prince actually released several albums, but they were only for NPG club members. The rest of us were stuck with this. At least albums like 3121 and Planet Earth helped Prince redeem himself musically for me.
Man, this album has always been a top pick of mine beyond his massive hits. But once I spun it on that gorgeous purple vinyl? Whoa! It's right up there with his finest work, in my book. The audio quality on this pressing is so rich and vibrant. Prince's musical genius is a joy to experience, and it's captured so well here. I'd say it's an essential addition to any collection. Rest in power, the Purple One!
Adore the material, especially that it's marbled purple vinyl. Very lively and expertly mastered. Unfortunately, my copy has a few air bubbles on both discs causing some background noise. Still, I'm happy I purchased it.
The purple vinyl 2 LP version of Musicology is super flat, no crackles, and it sounds amazing.
