Product description

Lou Reed's 2003 album "The Raven" is a unique and ambitious concept album that delves into the dark and poetic world of Edgar Allan Poe. Released on January 28, 2003, under the Reprise label, this 19th solo studio album by the iconic rock musician is a meticulously crafted homage to Poe's short stories and poems. With a runtime of 1 hour and 15 minutes, the album blends glam rock and proto-punk genres, creating a hauntingly beautiful soundscape.

"The Raven" features a stellar lineup of guest artists, including Laurie Anderson, Antony, Ornette Coleman, Blind Boys of Alabama, and even David Bowie. Each track is a reinterpretation of Poe's works, offering a fresh perspective on classic literature through the lens of rock music. From the eerie "The Raven" to the haunting "The Bed" and the powerful "Guilty," the album is a testament to Reed's ability to transform literary masterpieces into compelling musical experiences.

The album's standout tracks, often the more esoteric ones, showcase Reed's versatility and creativity. Tracks like "Hop Frog" featuring David Bowie and "I Wanna Know (The Pit and the Pendulum)" with the Blind Boys of Alabama highlight the album's eclectic mix of styles and influences. Whether you're a fan of Lou Reed, Edgar Allan Poe, or simply great music, "The Raven" offers a captivating journey through the darker corners of the human psyche.

This 2019 Limited Edition Reissue 3LP set is pressed on 180g vinyl.

  • Missing Discs, Great Sound

As a big fan of this album, I decided to grab the Record Store Day version, which is also its first vinyl release. It's great, the sound quality is excellent. The only issue I have is that my copy somehow came with two copies of disc 3 and no disc 2... So, no "Vanishing Act" or "Broadway Song" for me :P

  • Lou Reed's Later Brilliance

    5 out of 5 stars
    CpoTaldbPescDajalcDecember 22, 2024United KingdomπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

This album is fantastic. It seems like many folks are always searching for Lou Reed's Velvet Underground vibe, but here's the thing: post-Velvet Underground, Lou Reed was so much more than that. He ventured out in his own unique way, trying different things, and yet, most of his work is constantly compared to the VU discography, which just doesn't make sense. This record is amazing, with incredible music, spoken word, and great songs. Every line is delivered with such passion. I'm thrilled that Lou Reed found a love for poetry in his later works, even in his collaboration with Metallica, which deserves its own separate discussion. This is a perfect album to unwind to after a long day. Instead of watching TV or a movie, I put this on, have the lyrics up on Genius, and it's an enjoyable read and listen.

  • Intriguing Spoken Word Vinyl

The audio quality is great and it's pressed on nice vinyl. I picked this up at a local record shop not realizing it was a spoken word album, but it's really intriguing!

About Lou Reed

Lou Reed, born Lewis Allan Reed, was an iconic American singer-songwriter, musician, and actor, best known as the frontman of the influential rock band The Velvet Underground. With his distinctive deadpan voice, provocative lyrics, and innovative guitar playing, Reed left an indelible mark on the music world. Formed in 1965, The Velvet Underground, under Reed's guidance, produced four groundbreaking albums that, though not commercially successful at the time, have since been hailed as enormously influential. The band's association with Andy Warhol's Factory scene further cemented their status as pioneers of underground and alternative rock. Beyond The Velvet Underground, Reed's solo career spanned five decades, encompassing a diverse range of styles from glam rock to proto-punk. His solo work, including hits like "Walk on the Wild Side" and "Perfect Day," showcased his versatility and enduring impact on modern music. Reed's legacy as one of rock's most important singer-songwriters is undeniable, with a body of work that stands alongside legends like Dylan and Lennon-McCartney.
