Product description

Dive into the raw and unfiltered origins of Lou Reed's genius with "Words & Music, May 1965." This captivating collection of demos, released on September 16, 2022, by Light in the Attic, offers an intimate glimpse into the formative period of one of rock's most influential figures. Recorded in May 1965, these tracks showcase the early iterations of what would become iconic Velvet Underground classics, as well as lesser-known gems that highlight Reed's songwriting prowess.

The album features 11 tracks, including the haunting "Heroin," the poignant "Pale Blue Eyes," and the energetic "Buzz Buzz Buzz." Each song is performed in an acoustic, stripped-down style, allowing Reed's lyrics and melodies to shine with unparalleled clarity. The inclusion of an alternate version of "I'm Waiting for the Man" adds an extra layer of intrigue for fans and collectors alike.

"Words & Music, May 1965" is not just a historical artifact; it's a testament to Lou Reed's enduring legacy. The album's glam rock and proto-punk influences are evident, providing a fascinating snapshot of the musical landscape that shaped Reed's career. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to his work, this collection offers an extraordinary opportunity to experience the creative process of a true poet-songwriter. With a runtime of just over 44 minutes, it's a concise yet powerful journey through the mind of a musical innovator.

This LP is pressed on Yellow vinyl.

Folks complaining about the 45rpm format just don't understand. This is top-notch archival stuff, and it should be presented in the best way imaginable. If you're too slack to flip the record, just stream it digitally, for heaven's sake.

I'm a massive Lou Reed fan, but after giving this a listen, I half-kiddingly said to my wife, "Thank goodness for John Cale, right?" Both Lou and John shaped each other's careers in significant ways. Reed gets all the praise he deserves, but Cale is still way underrated and underappreciated.

Who do they think they are, putting such a fantastic and significant piece of history in such a lovely package on top-notch vinyl? The packaging is fantastic, the vinyl is beautifully pressed, and it comes with heavy printed inner sleeves and poly bags inside. I don't find the material tiring at all on my setup, and the sound is perfect for demos. I know everyone's always complaining about something these days, but this set is amazing. I can't believe how many people are whining about it being on 2LPs when there's a 1LP version...

  • Early Lou Tracks, Rough Quality

It's really neat to listen to these early tracks, and I'm a big fan of Lou, but this release is a bit exhausting. The sound quality is pretty rough, which is expected, I guess. I'm confused why they chose to do this as 45rpm when the original material isn't great quality. The packaging, though, is fantastic.

About Lou Reed

Lou Reed, born Lewis Allan Reed, was an iconic American singer-songwriter, musician, and actor, best known as the frontman of the influential rock band The Velvet Underground. With his distinctive deadpan voice, provocative lyrics, and innovative guitar playing, Reed left an indelible mark on the music world. Formed in 1965, The Velvet Underground, under Reed's guidance, produced four groundbreaking albums that, though not commercially successful at the time, have since been hailed as enormously influential. The band's association with Andy Warhol's Factory scene further cemented their status as pioneers of underground and alternative rock. Beyond The Velvet Underground, Reed's solo career spanned five decades, encompassing a diverse range of styles from glam rock to proto-punk. His solo work, including hits like "Walk on the Wild Side" and "Perfect Day," showcased his versatility and enduring impact on modern music. Reed's legacy as one of rock's most important singer-songwriters is undeniable, with a body of work that stands alongside legends like Dylan and Lennon-McCartney.
