The 'All Along the Watchtower' mix, as per Hendrix's usual engineer Eddie Kramer, saw the guitarist record a bunch of takes on the first day of sessions in January, held in London. He'd yell out chord changes to Dave Mason, who was present and played an extra 12-string guitar. Midway through the session, bass player Noel Redding grew unhappy and walked out. Mason then stepped in on bass. Kramer mentioned that the final bass part was actually played by Hendrix himself. Hendrix's pal and Rolling Stones multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones created the dry rattles heard at the intro, using a vibraslap. This basic version, without any overdubs, would later appear on the South Saturn Delta compilation.

Brian Jones, a friend of Hendrix's and a multi-instrumentalist for the Rolling Stones, created the dry rattles heard in the intro, using a vibraslap.
