One must commend Eddie Kramer for striving to deliver what could be considered the ultimate "fourth studio album" by Hendrix. "First Rays" largely compensates for Alan Douglas' attempts to profit with various distorted posthumous albums in the 70s. We'll never truly know what Jimi's fourth album would have been like, but this is the closest we'll get. All the tracks have been released prior, but they've been remastered and compiled specifically to align with Jimi's most renowned vision.
This is a solid try at putting together a lost, imaginary Hendrix record. The album sounds fantastic, really enjoyable to blast loud, just as it ought to be.
I've never listened to those remixed Alan Douglas versions of these tracks from CRY OF LOVE and such, and I'm quite happy about that. However, I did purchase this album on CD way back in '97 when it first came out, and I was absolutely floored. The sequencing is top-notch. There's so much happening here, a wide range of sounds. It's packed with soul. It rocks hard. Jimi's guitars are all over the place. Most of the songs feel complete. There are a couple of instrumentals, but they don't come off as filler or unfinished. Essentially, this plays like an excellent fourth studio album, and it's as strong as any of his lifetime releases. The sound quality on this pressing is fantastic, Eddie Kramer did an incredible job assembling this. The guitar, drums, vocals, bass...everything sounds clear, sharp, and well-balanced, and the soundstage is vibrant and dynamic. My copy plays like it's brand new, with not a single hint of surface noise. (#4060 of 5000)
Gorgeous, great sounding, and top-notch quality release. The booklet that comes with it is packed with fascinating details.
I've got the same cat model, but mine was manufactured in the EU.
