The cover art might give you the impression that this music was recorded at the Rainbow Bridge concert in Maui, but that's not the case. Most of these tracks were actually prepared for his upcoming project. The only exception is the standout track, a live rendition of "Hear My Train A Comin'" from the incredible Berkeley show. The songs here were pulled from different sessions, with just three originating from his Electric Ladyland Studios, but there's some solid material on this album. Similar to the Cry of Love album, we can't be sure how these songs would have sounded on vinyl if Hendrix had been alive. He even asks if the microphone is on during "New Rising Sun," so I doubt that was a final take. "Look Over Yonder" is probably the weakest song, but apart from that, everything else is great. This might just be the best posthumous studio release.
Another collection of Jimi's work after his passing, blending studio recordings from '68 to '70, with the standout being a fiery live rendition of "Hear My Train a Comin'". The remastering by RL is consistently top-notch, though it's a touch quieter than his typical tracks.
Quiet, lively, cozy, vintage. This pressing sounds absolutely phenomenal. Top-notch gatefold and poly-lined inner sleeve.
