How do you even rate an album like this one? The music, well, it's fantastic! It's the Beatles Live! :) The recording quality isn't great though, it's from '64/'65, so what can we expect? So, the sound quality isn't a 5 or a 4, more like a 2 or a 3. But, I can't give it a 2 or a 3 because it's probably as good as it gets without messing with the music too much. So, the question remains, how do you truly rate it? I gave it a 4. Can't be a 5, but I can't do a 3 as, well, it's Live Beatles! :)
I was curious to hear how this newly remastered/remixed version would fare. I questioned how a three track tape packed with 17,000 shrieking girls and an under-amplified Fab Four could be enhanced. I enjoyed the original 1977 version quite a bit, it truly captured the madness of those US shows. So, I bought it, despite the awful cover. I got comfortable, poured a glass of wine, and put the needle down. I was met with a symphony of screaming girls, just like the original, then the intro, just like the original, then right into ‘Twist and shout’, just like the original! For a moment, I thought I'd actually played my original copy. But no, there was that dreadful cover staring back at me. I continued listening to the entire album. So, how can I review this? It sounds like a recording from a three track tape full of 17,000 screaming girls and an inadequately amplified Fab Four. Or to put it simply, it sounds exactly the same as the original release. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I guess I did hope to notice some kind of sonic upgrade. The only noticeable difference were the four bonus tracks. I'm going to keep this, solely because of the extra songs. I love it, of course I love it, it's The Beatles!
This is a fantastic pressing of a stellar recording capturing a band at their live peak. The guys are absolutely on fire, tearing through their set and proving just how incredible they were on stage. The new mix, with less crowd noise, makes it so much more enjoyable to listen to.
I ain't got the 1977 edition to compare, but I gotta say, this was an absolute blast to listen to! The vibe and performance are out of this world. As for the pressing, the vinyl is super quiet and the sound is crisp & punchy!
