Honestly, I couldn't care less about what the critics say. This collection had me in tears from start to finish. I absolutely ADORE Anthology 4. Picture this: cozy in a dressing gown, tucked in an armchair on a chilly November night, spinning each vinyl record all the way through... and I was utterly captivated, emotionally drained by the end. A truly magnificent compilation, perfectly sequenced, with all four members shining through distinctly. Not a single issue with the sound quality, and what's even better, there are countless emotional highs that I don't recall experiencing with A1, A2, or A3. For fifty-five years, I've been a fan of these talented lads, and I'm STILL amazed by the journey, the effort, the creativity, the diversity, the boldness. The greatest story ever told just keeps on giving. The pressing? Flawless, as clean as a whistle. I didn't even bother cleaning it before playing, even though it's probably GZ Media? TOP-NOTCH vinyl product.
In my opinion, this should've been a standalone album, not part of the Anthology series, maybe something like "Unlikely". We all know the marketing wasn't coincidental, of course. The remixes of "Real Love" and "Free as a Bird" are quite strange and feel like a poor use of time. Lennon's voice sounds so unnatural. I'd prefer the demo version over this AI-like voice. But as a die-hard Beatles fan, I'll be skipping this record.
Contrary to what's stated, the initial three volumes also offer Hi-Res at 24/96 kHz on Apple Music! Regardless, this compilation feels thrown together and lacks excitement. The new mix of 'Real Love' is shorter and cuts out parts of George's guitar, which is odd, and many tracks here were already released in the Super Deluxe Sets.
