Hands down, my top pick from Maiden! This album's got a vibe that's unlike their usual stuff, and with Bruce Bailey's vocals, it's an absolute masterpiece.
Following Bruce Dickinson's departure, Iron Maiden had to carry on somehow. But why so gloomy? And why kick off with the nearly twelve-minute-long "Sign of the Cross", which begins with Gregorian chants? At least Blaze Bayley isn't a bad replacement. His vocals lie somewhere between Paul Di'Anno and Bruce Dickinson, but sometimes lean a bit too much towards hard rock. The album's dark mood might also be linked to bassist, chief songwriter, and producer Steve Harris' divorce, as many lyrics are written from a first-person perspective, like in "Judgement of Heaven" or "2 a.m.". In the song "Fortunes of War", he definitely processes this, though the beginning reminds one too much of the classic "Fear of the Dark". With "Man on the Edge", the band has crafted a solid rock song, perhaps the only one on this record that invites sing-alongs. The closing track "The Unbeliever" could very well be directed at Bruce Dickinson, who famously rejoined the band on a later album. Verdict: A gloomy transitional album.

Wow, what an incredible track! Its gloomy and sorrowful vibe...it makes me feel both down and hopeful at the same time. The pressing is fantastic! The mastering on this re-release is top-notch. The sound quality is amazing! Harris' bass guitar is so loud and rich. You can catch every single note. Blaze's voice is perfect for this album. Thanks, Blaze and Maiden, for this experimental masterpiece!
Fantastic pressing. Absolutely top-tier. As for the music, this is right up there with the best of Maiden's discography. My top three Maiden albums are: the self-titled debut, Somewhere in Time, and The X-Factor. Each of those albums feature a different vocalist, so it's clearly the music & lyrics that matter most to me. I haven't given a full listen to anything Maiden have released since The X-Factor.
