This record has left an immense mark and holds great significance over the years, not just for jazz enthusiasts but also for countless musicians, arrangers, and producers across various genres. It stands as a stellar example of what can be achieved with complete artistic liberty. The artists were given this freedom by Impulse producer Bob Theile when they recorded for the ABC/Paramount label in the 60's. The album exudes a sense of assurance and energy, making it accessible and artistically genuine, qualities that are evident with each listen, even 44 years post its initial release. The arrangements and performances are nothing short of sublime. From the sweeping and ceremonial sounds of Sanders' horn to the rhythmic bass lines, the skillfully placed guitar of Sonny Sharrock, and the diverse percussion, this is a truly powerful recording. It's easy to see how it inspired and invigorated the creativity and exploration of the Detroit scene in the late 60's, think MC5 and Stooges, not to mention the numerous other artists who have discovered it since. A special mention must be made about the piano, used with brilliant contrast, particularly in its delicate introduction to the calm after the storm of 'Upper Egypt & Lower Egypt'. The piano's chordal placements are used with grace and restraint, showcasing the dynamics and voicings throughout. 'Tauhid' is a genuine classic, with a beauty, importance, and urgency that resonates as clearly today as it did in 1967.
My copy sounds absolutely fantastic. It's dynamic, quiet, and smooth. It's a great value pressing. When I see the negative comments here about the sound quality, I start to question the motives of those who posted them.
I've listened to this from start to finish. It's a quiet pressing with hardly any surface noise. I totally get what you're saying about the packaging - I would've been willing to pay extra for a replica of the original gatefold. It's not the best reissue out there, but it could've been a lot worse. I'm just happy to have this music available.
this gatefold cover was clearly crafted with so much attention to detail... the condition is flawless, and it's held up amazingly well for being a half-century old. a top-notch pressing from one of jazz's most celebrated and admired musicians; this album, while not as widely known, deserves to be listened to in its entirety with a keen ear and an open mind. aum
Incredible debut album from Pharaoh! Recorded in '66, heavily inspired by a Coltrane show, the band is tight and phenomenal. Side A takes you on a fantastic voyage through Egypt, both physically and spiritually, with each musician contributing to this amazing tone poem. Side B features an impression of Japan and some excellent free-form pieces. If you're into some altissimo and screaming effects, Pharaoh delivers a great little duo with Sonny Sharrock. This album was truly ahead of its time. This first pressing is super clean, capturing all the detail and dynamics you'd want. The stereo recording has a wonderful soundstage and thoughtful percussion placement. 5 stars, no doubt.
