I'm absolutely thrilled with this album! I took a chance and bought it not knowing much about it, even though I'm a massive fan of hers! What a fantastic surprise for someone who loves this period of Jazz. It's quite intricate and sophisticated!
Joni Mitchell was always kinda dull to me, just another singer-songwriter spilling their guts. Then, in '79, a buddy with a record club membership picked up "Mingus" on reel-to-reel and let me hear it. Mind blown! Now that's what I'm talking about! This record was huge for me, marking the first time I'd ever heard that legendary fretless bass played by the incredible Jaco Pastorius. Sure, over the next couple years, I got to know all the cats he inspired. But even now, 38 years down the line, this album still sounds untouchable.
I'm thrilled I bought this album! I actually went for it not knowing much about it, even though I'm a massive fan of hers! What a fantastic surprise for someone who loves this era of Jazz so much. Quite intricate and sophisticated!
Incredible music. Amazing topic and theme (RIP Mingus). Phenomenal musicians (Joni, Herbie, Jaco, Wayne, Peter Erskine, Don Alias, Emil Richards, really?). Superb mastering (BG). Just wow. And absolutely, if you're a Joni fan, this is right up there with her finest work, standing tall next to Blue, Hejira, Hissing, C&S, DJRD. Essential listen.
For those who enjoy Joni Mitchell paired with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius, and Wayne Shorter, this is the album for you. Genuine jazz artists are featured here, though they do keep their playing somewhat subdued. Joni's voice is rich and soothing, like warm honey. This album serves as a heartfelt homage to Charles Mingus and does so very effectively. The sound quality of this pressing is superb, truly a delight to listen to.
