Well, I was kinda hesitant 'cause of all the bad reviews about 75th anniversary editions, but my version of this one is awesome, and you can't find a better deal.
Hank and his crew have put out a pretty solid hard bop album here. Keep in mind, Lee Morgan and Herbie Hancock lend their talents to a few tracks, while Donald Byrd and Andrew Hill step in on the others. In my opinion, tracks A2, B1, and B3 are the standout pieces. As for this BN75 reissue, I'm not exactly blown away. My copy, which is new and sealed, has some clipping issues, a couple of odd digital glitches, and quite a bit of surface noise and crackle between songs. I've given it two thorough wet cleanings, and a visual check shows plenty of non-fill. What a letdown. Finding early BN pressings is next to impossible these days, so if you're after this recording, this might be your only choice, and it's not a great one. 3.5 stars, but I'm knocking off half a star due to the poor quality of the pressing.
The one I got had a huge scratch running through the first song, which makes it skip a bit now and then... I'll hold onto it though, as it's still fun to listen to even though it was VG+ out of the box. The sound quality is pretty good.
Yet another Blue Note treasure. The disc is flawless and perfectly flat. It's incredibly quiet with a tight sound. The content is absolutely killer, and the overall vibe is just right. The mastering is top-notch. Jazz fans and Blue Note collectors will love this, it's unbeatable for the price.
Amazing album, though the quality control on the pressing is a bit lacking. Blue Note 75 reissues have been hit or miss, and while the sound here is pretty good, my new copy arrived with hairlines, scratches, and tiny pits all over the record - a few skips and the sound isn't smooth in those areas. Can't argue with the reasonable price, but Blue Note should step up their game on these classic reissues... they warrant a bit more care and attention.
