Product description

Dive into the rich, soulful sounds of "Dippin'" by Hank Mobley, a timeless jazz album that has been beautifully remastered for modern ears. Originally recorded in 1965 at the legendary Van Gelder Studio, this collection of six tracks showcases Mobley's masterful tenor saxophone alongside the brilliant trumpet work of Lee Morgan. The album spans a variety of jazz styles, from hard bop and bebop to cool jazz and jazz blues, offering a diverse and engaging listening experience.

"Dippin'" kicks off with the title track, "The Dip," a groovy and upbeat number that sets the tone for the rest of the album. "Recado Bossa Nova" brings a touch of Brazilian influence with its smooth, bossa nova rhythms, while "The Break Through" and "The Vamp" deliver classic hard bop energy. The album also features a tender ballad, "I See Your Face Before Me," and the bluesy "Ballin'," both of which highlight Mobley's versatility and depth as a musician.

This remastered edition, released by Blue Note Records in 2005, preserves the original magic of the recordings while enhancing the audio quality for contemporary listeners. Whether you're a long-time fan of Hank Mobley or a newcomer to his music, "Dippin'" is a fantastic addition to any jazz collection. The album's 42-minute runtime is packed with memorable performances and infectious rhythms that will keep you engaged from start to finish. So, sit back, relax, and let the smooth sounds of Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan transport you to a world of classic jazz.

This is a 2012 Limited Edition Reissue released as a LP.

  • Dull Audio, Disappointing Release

    1 out of 5 stars
    KuwzoveMSeptember 10, 2025United States🇺🇸

The audio quality is quite dull and indistinct, it's truly a poor release... Plus, the center hole isn't large enough...I wish there was a Tone Poet version or Blue Note 85th Anniversary edition or something! It's such a disappointment because the music itself is fantastic.

  • Sharp, Rich, Die-Hard Favorite

    5 out of 5 stars
    ocyiebdvsaquqJuly 10, 2025United States🇺🇸

Excellent rendition. It strikes a flawless balance between sharpness and richness, making it more suited for this high-energy album than the KGP mastering in my opinion. Absolutely snatch it up if you're a die-hard enthusiast of this session, which happens to be one of my all-time favorites from the label." (Note: "Definetely" is misspelled in the original, so "Absolutely" is used in the rewritten review to maintain a similar type of error.)

  • Incredible Session, Stellar Mastering

    5 out of 5 stars
    novawfudimjpJune 14, 2025United States🇺🇸

Mobley, Morgan, and Mabern Jr. put on an incredible session, and the VAN GELDER Mono mastering is simply out of this world!!!!

  • Excellent Sound Quality

Great pressing. No problems. SQ is excellent. Loving it.

  • Worth the Purchase

Excellent quality for this album. Go ahead and purchase it if the cost seems reasonable.

About Hank Mobley

Hank Mobley, the "middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone," carved out a unique niche in the jazz world with his laid-back, melodic style that perfectly embodied the hard bop genre. Born in Eastman, Georgia, Mobley's smooth and soulful sound stood out amidst the more aggressive tones of his contemporaries like John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. His compositions, such as "Soul Station" and "Dig Dis," are staples of the hard bop canon, and his extensive work with Blue Note Records from the 1950s to the 1970s solidified his status as a jazz legend. Mobley's collaborations with giants like Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, and Art Blakey showcased his versatility and influence, making him a pivotal figure in the development of hard bop. His distinctive tone and subtle, melodic approach continue to inspire generations of musicians, cementing his legacy as one of the most underrated yet essential figures in jazz history.
