  • Hard Bop Brilliance, Pressing Fails

    3 out of 5 stars
    wesaLR_November 28, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

Hank Mobley truly shines as a leader in the hard bop scene, just as he does as a sideman. His improvisation skills are impressive, and he has a knack for assembling bands that perfectly match his musical approach. Take his 1967 lineup, featuring Jackie McLean, Blue Mitchell, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins—what an incredible group! If you're just getting into hard bop and enjoy Lee Morgan's "Sidewinder," this album is a fantastic choice. While you're at it, give Sonny Clark's "Cool Struttin'" a listen too. Unfortunately, the quality of this pressing is a real letdown. Another Blue Note gem spoiled by Rainbo Records. I don't recall paying bargain bin prices for this reissue, but that's exactly what I got. Funny enough, this was the replacement for my defective copy of Lee Morgan's "Lee Way," another Rainbo Records disaster. Steer clear of this pressing.

Wow, this pressing is Incredible! 👏 OMG 😲 I couldn't believe it, especially since it was pressed at Rainbow Records 😳 (You know what I'm talking about) and it probably came from a digital file! The sound quality is soooo good 👍 And at this price, you just can't miss out!

  • Avoid Rainbo's Mobley Pressing

    3 out of 5 stars

Hank Mobley truly shines as both a hard bop sideman and a bandleader, his talent is undeniable. He's an exceptional improviser and has a knack for gathering musicians that perfectly match his vibe. Take his 1967 lineup, featuring Jackie McLean, Blue Mitchell, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins – what an incredible ensemble! If you're just dipping your toes into hard bop and dig the groove of Lee Morgan's "Sidewinder", this album is a fantastic choice. And hey, don't miss out on Sonny Clark's "Cool Struttin'" either. Now, the bad news – the pressing on this one is a real bummer. Another Blue Note gem tarnished by Rainbo Records. I can't recall if I snagged this for a bargain bin price, but that's the quality I ended up with. Funny enough, this was the replacement I picked after returning a faulty pressing of Lee Morgan's "Lee Way", another Rainbo Records masterpiece. Steer clear of this pressing, folks.

Wow, this pressing is absolutely fantastic! 👏 I couldn't believe it when I heard it, especially since it was pressed at Rainbow Records 😳 (you know what I'm talking about 😉) and it likely came from a digital file! But it sounds incredible 👍, and at this price, you'd be crazy to miss out!

About Hank Mobley

Hank Mobley, the "middleweight champion of the tenor saxophone," carved out a unique niche in the jazz world with his laid-back, melodic style that perfectly embodied the hard bop genre. Born in Eastman, Georgia, Mobley's smooth and soulful sound stood out amidst the more aggressive tones of his contemporaries like John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. His compositions, such as "Soul Station" and "Dig Dis," are staples of the hard bop canon, and his extensive work with Blue Note Records from the 1950s to the 1970s solidified his status as a jazz legend. Mobley's collaborations with giants like Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, and Art Blakey showcased his versatility and influence, making him a pivotal figure in the development of hard bop. His distinctive tone and subtle, melodic approach continue to inspire generations of musicians, cementing his legacy as one of the most underrated yet essential figures in jazz history.
