This is a pretty good pressing, and what an amazing album it is! There's some noticeable surface noise on my almost mint copy, but it's not too bad overall. This album is meant to be played loud. Dive into it rather than just having it on in the background. While it's clearly a Hank Mobley album, I really like a lot of Lee Morgan's contributions and the tuba work from Howard Johnson too. I don't have any other pressings to compare this one with. My rating is for the pressing, not the music itself.
This album truly stands out. It's among my all-time favorite Blue Note recordings, and I believe it's due to the unique addition of the euphonium and Duke Pearson's brilliant arrangements. Side A is pure perfection from start to finish. Even though it's been on permanent loan from my old college radio station, it's seen more playtime now than ever.
I'm on the same page as a couple of others who think this would make an ideal Tone Poet release. In the meantime, we've got these pressings to keep us going, and this one's actually quite good. The sound is clear and lively, with a decent sound stage. Those low horns, arranged by Duke Pearson, really shine. It's a solid mid-tier Hank Mobley session, definitely worth owning if you've already got his more famous records. The covers for this Liberty series have their critics, but this one's better than some out there.
I wouldn't go so far as to say the quality is terrible. It's a tad static and could use more liveliness, but it's still quite enjoyable, much like the rest of the Tone Poets series. Unless you're a real audio perfectionist, go ahead and grab it.
The Scorpions vinyl record delivers fantastic sound quality and comes with stunning Japanese artwork. I'm happy to report that my copy is completely flawless.
