Product description

"Motor City Scene" is a captivating jazz album that showcases the extraordinary talents of trumpeter Donald Byrd and saxophonist Pepper Adams. Recorded in 1960 and released in 1961 under Bethlehem Records, this album is a testament to the rich musical heritage of Detroit during the 1940s and 1950s. The collaboration between Byrd and Adams, along with other notable musicians like Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, and Paul Chambers, creates a dynamic and soulful soundscape that spans various jazz genres, including hard bop, jazz funk, soul jazz, and jazz fusion.

The album features five tracks, each remastered in 2013 to bring out the best in the original recordings. From the opening notes of "Stardust" to the final chords of "Bitty Ditty," the music is a blend of intricate melodies, powerful rhythms, and improvisational brilliance. The tracks "Philson," "Trio," and "Libeccio" further highlight the versatility and creativity of the musicians, offering a rich tapestry of sounds that are both timeless and innovative.

"Motor City Scene" is not just an album; it's a journey through the vibrant jazz scene of a bygone era. The collaboration between Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams, along with the stellar supporting cast, makes this a standout release in the world of jazz. About Donald Byrd

Donald Byrd, born Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II on December 9, 1932, was a trailblazing American trumpeter, composer, and vocalist who left an indelible mark on the world of jazz and rhythm & blues. Renowned as one of the finest hard bop trumpeters following the era of Clifford Brown, Byrd's dynamic and biting style captivated audiences and critics alike. His prolific career spanned decades, during which he recorded extensively both as a leader and a sideman, showcasing his versatility across genres like hard bop, jazz funk, soul jazz, and jazz fusion. In the 1970s, Byrd became a champion of jazz/R&B crossover, producing some of his most funky and celebrated work, often in collaboration with the Mizell Brothers. Beyond his musical achievements, Byrd was also a pioneering jazz educator, inspiring generations of students on African-American college and university campuses. His legacy as a musician and educator continues to influence and inspire, making him a true icon in the world of jazz.
