  • Can's Paris 1973 Live Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    cuahlsawsJanuary 26, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

In my opinion, "Live in Paris 1973" stands out as the finest official live album by Can. It captures the essence of their classic era, featuring Damo during the "Ege Bamyasi" phase. The audio quality is impressive and engaging, especially considering the recording conditions. The band sounds invigorated and dynamic, and compared to other performances, they seem quite organized, dedicating a significant portion to their songs. Does anyone know if Can performed twice in Paris in 1973? I came across a gig on YouTube claiming to be from the same year in Paris but at a different venue, possibly the Bataclan. Can's live shows were always an adventure; sometimes they fell short, but more often, they were magical. However, you never knew what to expect. I wish we could recapture some of that spirit today, as many concerts now rely on playback and lack spontaneity, becoming quite dull. If you're a fan of classic Can, you can't go wrong with this album.

  • Disappointing Can Live Album

    2 out of 5 stars
    blibuppaxSeptember 27, 2024United States🇺🇸

Typically, I'm all about improv, drone, noise, and musical exploration, and I genuinely loved Live In Stuttgart (just like many other Can albums), but around ten minutes before Side Three wraps up, I just thought, 'ENOUGH ALREADY'. It felt lazy, self-indulgent, and downright stupid, with zero attitude to boot—just mindless jamming that wasted time and space with meaningless noodling on instruments. These guys are taking me on a 'joyride'... ha ha, ever felt like you've been conned? Lydon asked way back when (and, by the way, I ADORE PiL!). Yeah, John, I do right now. This is the first record in AGES where I had to stop listening and lift the needle. My bad, folks. On the bright side, the pressing quality was top-notch. My copy was spotless, as expected. Still, it's a clean listen with great vinyl quality. I'm actually fond of the artwork, but whatever. I'll likely offload this soon.

  • Improv Fatigue, Some Gems

    3 out of 5 stars
    juybafuzFebruary 29, 2024United States🇺🇸

Once again, we get more of those wandering improv sessions with Damo improvising on top. The familiar tracks Spoon and Vitamin C are quite good, though. Why don't they give names to the songs? I'm starting to get tired of this series. I guess you had to be there with Can live to truly understand these moments...and let's not even talk about the cover art!
