"Who Are You," released on August 18, 1978, under Geffen, is a classic rock masterpiece by The Who that continues to resonate with fans and critics alike. This album is a testament to the band's enduring influence and musical prowess, featuring a blend of powerful rock anthems and introspective tracks that showcase their versatility.

The album opens with the iconic title track, "Who Are You," a song that has become synonymous with The Who's signature sound. Other standout tracks include "Sister Disco," a funky, danceable tune, and "Music Must Change," a reflective piece that highlights the band's ability to evolve with the times. "Guitar And Pen" and "Love Is Coming Down" offer a more introspective look at the human experience, while "Had Enough" and "905" deliver the raw energy and rebellious spirit that The Who are known for.

The deluxe edition of the album includes several bonus tracks, such as the 1996 version of "Who Are You," the Group Version of "Empty Glass," and alternate mixes of "Guitar And Pen" and "Love Is Coming Down." These additional tracks provide a deeper dive into the creative process behind the album and offer a unique perspective on the band's sound.

With a runtime of over an hour and ten minutes, "Who Are You" is a substantial body of work that showcases The Who's ability to craft memorable melodies and powerful lyrics. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to their music, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.

  • Had Enough Memories

    4 out of 5 stars

Had Enough doesn't feature John Entwistle on lead vocals. I received a brand new, sealed copy from OP as a Christmas gift. It's filled with wonderful memories.

  • Muted, Misaligned Reissue

    2 out of 5 stars
    guvwapt40818 December 2025United States🇺🇸

Meh (but it's a decent album!)Unlike my UK original, this one's sound is more muted and lacks clarity. It attempts to compensate with a bit more bass, but it's more of a certain bass bloom rather than real depth and texture. The soundstage isn't as wide, which is another downside. But the worst part... some—not all—tracks here are in the wrong key/pitch and sound a bit sadder in their slightly altered presentation. Most ~2015 Who reissues sound fantastic, but not this one. At least the vinyl is quiet (for GZ) and the cover is replicated alright, but it's not enough to justify buying this over finding a clean UK first, which aren't hard to find or expensive.

  • Flawed Pitch-Altered Reissue

This one's not so good (though the album itself is great!). Compared to my UK original, the sound here is more muted and less clear. It tries to make up for it with a bit more bass, but it's more of a certain bass boost than actual depth and richness. The soundstage isn't as wide, which is another downside. But the worst part is... some, but not all, tracks are in the wrong key/pitch and sound a bit sadder because of it. Most of the ~2015 Who reissues sound fantastic, but not this one. At least the vinyl is quiet (for GZ) and the cover is decently replicated, but it's not enough to justify buying this over finding a clean UK first press, which aren't hard to find or expensive.

  • Live Who Triumphs

    5 out of 5 stars
    BuyHodtwewc10 December 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

I'm not a huge fan of most of the "Who Are You" studio album, it's a bit too proggy for my taste. However, I purchased this for discs 4-7, the rehearsals and live performances, and it's absolutely worth it! It's fantastic to hear the guys having a great time jamming and playing around with covers. It's also interesting to hear them "knocking into shape" the title track, "Who Are You". The Shepperton gig from May '78 features some enjoyable, noisy, and aggressive versions of "My Wife" and "My Generation". It's intriguing to listen to the original version of "Won't Get Fooled Again" before Keith Moon's drum part was overdubbed and edited. Now, the absolute highlight of this set is the 2-CD live '79 set. They're playing like absolute beasts! It's a composite show compiled from gigs in Pontiac, Detroit & Philly. I'm as skeptical about Kenny as anyone, but there's no denying that all of them absolutely nailed it. This might be one of the greatest live Who albums. Pete and John sound exhausted but play brilliantly. There's some trouble with the crowd, and Pete has to tell them to take one step back to prevent a crush. Another layer of trauma for the band to carry on top of what they were already dealing with. This is a phoenix from the ashes story. If you're into live Who, this set is worth it, even if you're not a fan of the studio album.
