I gotta say, this cassette blows my original '86 vinyl version of this compilation out of the water (definitely mastered with CDs in mind). Totally worth grabbing this instead!
Brought this stunning Comp back to life...The wax plays smooth, surface hiss is barely there, and it sounds fantastic (Vast soundstage, great instrument separation, highs shine, Bass is deep but not overpowering...Excellent playback) on my humble system...(Fluance RT-82 w/Acrylic Platter, ATN-XP cart/5 needle. Nobsound T3 Phono Amp, Aiyima A07 Pro, Kicker KB6B, & 2x Polk PSW10 Subs...Basic Budget Setup)...Enjoy Your Listening
The person who remastered this did an excellent job. Finally, a CT pressing that isn't overpowered by high frequencies. There's no information about who handled this remaster, but I'd bet it wasn't Robin Guthrie. Highly recommended.
Unlike the initial 4AD/Relativity version, this one's a bit toned down but keeps most of its punch. The pressing is a tad flat. Still, it's a solid buy.
This isn't the absolute worst temporary solution for obtaining an earlier version, and it's free from the usual flaws found in many reissue pressings. However, the remaster's modern infatuation with a heavy bass leaves little space for all the dynamics present here. Especially the vocal layers, which on this record should be the main focus... the middle is a muddy EQ adjustment that highlights rather than fixes. It's clear that a fat bottom was the remaster's primary concern.
