  • Bowie's Dance of Defiance

    5 out of 5 stars
    qayij14 September 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

This 12" is hands down my top pick for this track. At the core of Bowie’s music, spanning from "Laughing Gnome" to "Blackstar," what's the common thread? Is it the lyrics or the tunes? I'd say it's the lyrics—straight from Bowie, packed with recurring symbols and his signature wit. His lyrics reflect his take on the outside world, what he reads, the art he loves, politics, you name it. Meanwhile, the music is more of a team effort; Bowie drawing from current trends, rock, disco, hip hop, grunge... the musicians and bands he collaborates with. Think Eno and Bowie versus Nile Rodgers and Bowie. It's fascinating to dissect the lyrics and music as separate entities and see what the lyrical narrative reveals across Bowie’s entire discography. The "Let's Dance" album, a fantastic record, has faced flak for its disco elements. (As if disco lacks depth—what nonsense.) Even Bowie had some harsh words to say. But you can't take isolated quotes as gospel. Later on, Bowie might sing a different tune... I was just listening to David Bowie, "Let's Dance," Under The Moonlight Mix, PM Edit. At the end, there's a revealing bit of Bowie dialogue. His deep voice says, about "Let’s Dance," *the lyrics share more with "Heroes" than with disco (he's on the defensive), there's a desperation in the lyric, it's almost like a 'last dance', it was gonna be called "Last Dance," but I named it "Let’s Dance"* (this is a rough quote, so I put it in asterisks). Separately, I recall Bowie discussing the lyrics of "Heroes." Often, "Heroes" is seen as a celebration of individuality, strong heroes, largely because Bowie sings it in an uplifting, exclamatory tone. Bowie states, through the lyrics, he intended it to be interpreted more ironically, not as enduring heroes, but a fleeting burst of defiance against the outside power of authority. “We're nothing, and nothing will help us, maybe we're lying, then you better not stay, but we could be safer, just for one day.” Let's dance, for fear tonight is all > we could be heroes, just for one day. "Heroes" is a dark album. The instrumental "Sense of Doubt" is a powerful mix of ominous, crushing, deep tones interwoven with lighter, almost heavenly moments, like storm clouds parting. The track's mood for me echoes the drug heroin, stasis, the then-current film "Christine," Berlin, the cold war politics of that era. I think it would be impossible to constantly recreate albums like "Heroes" back-to-back. The artist evolves (for the better). But how much does the music actually change? "Let’s Dance" has a definite connection to "Heroes." In fact, "Let’s Dance" is a response to what could be seen as the bleak finality of "Heroes." When there's a Strong Sense of Doubt: What do you do? Let’s Dance. In the video for "Let’s Dance," it starts with a radio being tossed out, filmed in reverse, bringing music 'back', a kind of post-apocalyptic surrender, discarding technology and Bowie then crooning effortlessly in the middle of nowhere, outback Australia, getting everyone to dance: Bowie is global. Bowie’s blond hair was a bit of a shock, but I guess part of the perfect pop package. The video also cuts to footage of the poverty and grueling work of the aboriginals, contrasting the dusty outback with the gleaming skyscrapers of the booming eighties (seen on the horizon), they bare-footedly stomp on a pair of red stilettos (and dance the blues). There's a lot of sarcasm in the song, the video has a sense of post-apocalypse (post 'Heroes') to it. The title "Let’s Dance" is brilliant, with its underlying sense of resignation, Bowie is saying things may be f***ed, might as well dance. And you might as well dance as if it were your "Last Dance". (To make it clear: I still prefer "Heroes.")

  • Great Pressing, Unique Finds

    SjefufAjPozpy8 September 2025United States🇺🇸

This is a really great pressing. I was pleasantly surprised to find almost no surface noise. The audio quality is crisp and well-balanced. The mixes might not be to everyone's liking, but they're a unique addition to any collection, regardless. It's a shame they weren't individually numbered. Definitely a great find! The audio quality is amazing. It's a very hush-hush pressing, with a powerful and sparkling sound. I'd never heard a better version of "Let's Dance" till now.
