Awesome album and the pressing is top-notch... My copy has zero hiss, it truly does the record justice. So glad I got it!
I'd been meaning to check out this album for a while, and when I finally got around to it (thanks to some birthday money), I'm so glad I did. It's an absolutely fantastic album to listen to. Earlier this year, I was really struggling with my mental health (due to life after cancer), and this album has been incredibly healing; especially the track “Joy,” which resonates with me on so many levels. Though Nick doesn't claim to be a Christian, I am one, and this album just feels so much more authentic and real than a lot of the CCM music out there. It's a much-needed breath of fresh air – Great job Nick for creating such a wonderful piece of art.
Nick's put together a deeply personal album here. It's clear he's been through a lot, and this record really captures that. Having lost two of my own kids, I can truly relate to what he's going through, so the songs really hit home. As for the music itself, I'd say it's got that same vibe as The Cure's latest – lots of layers, with big orchestration and backing vocals. It's a typical Nick sound, though: his vocals take center stage, with a wide soundstage and some solid bass and drum work.
To start with, this is by far the most robust sleeve I own for any record. It's top-notch quality, although, as others have pointed out, it's a bit of a struggle to slide the record in and out. But I always use a poly inner sleeve, which makes the whole process a lot smoother. So, the packaging isn't really a big deal for me. Moving on, my copy is incredibly quiet, with hardly any surface noise at all. As for the sound mix? It's got me thinking about The Cure’s Songs of a Lost World. It feels like a deliberate choice by The Bad Seeds. Everything is quite upfront with minimal soundstage. It's not what I'd call a flawless pressing, but for what it is, it sounds pretty good in my opinion. The record still packs more punch and detail than the digital version, in my humble opinion. That said, there's a bit more noticeable sibilance on Nick's vocals. Would I prefer a more detailed mix and mastering, like my pristine Push The Sky Away pressing? Absolutely. But I get it, and it's alright. All things considered, if you're a fan of the album, you'll still enjoy this pressing. Because the mix is what it is, no matter the format. Pretty hush-hush pressing but lacks a lot in dynamic range when you stack it up against the digital version. Is it the same mix, I wonder? Still, it's super detailed, that's for sure.
