While I'm no Neil Young expert, I've done enough reading to suggest that this album is among his finest, likely due to the circumstances and the lyrics they convey. That said, I find the album a bit sparse, the melodies somewhat unremarkable (no rare gems here), and the performance lacking the ragged, grungy, or forceful energy to truly move me. Albums like 'On the Beach', 'Ragged Glory', '.. Goldrush', and a few others better showcase his talent. It's average, but still worth owning, considering it's Neil Young we're talking about! And a little advice for whiny rock stars... If you're tired of fame and unimpressed with the 'music biz' and helicopter rides to your own shows, stop complaining and do something else with your time (or write a song, of course!)
This one sounds INCREDIBLE. I'm over the moon that I managed to grab this addition to my all-time favorite Neil record!
Having had the Tonight's the Night album in my collection for roughly three decades, I must say the remastering doesn't seem to make much of a difference, not that it's a big deal. It's a gritty, unpolished, and deeply emotional capture of performances that's teetering on the brink. The bonus material is just okay, though Everybody's Alone is a standout. The alternate version of Lookout Joe just doesn't sit right with me.
I'm clueless about all these remastered releases, but this one's a stunner and sounds fantastic. It's a shame they included this silly etching instead of throwing in more tracks. Like someone mentioned earlier, the second take of Lookout Joe should've just been a bonus. He might as well toss in Traces, Human Highway, and Winterlong to round out the sessions.
Definitely a fantastic album, but the vinyl arrived in those flimsy paper sleeves that clung to the record. The vinyl itself was grimy, marked up, and had some light scratches from those lousy sleeves. I'm planning to give it a spin after giving it a good clean with my Degritter MKII and will update my thoughts soon. Seems like quality control's been slipping on a lot of NY's recent drops.
