I must have gotten lucky, as my Canadian version sounds great. There's no distortion or warping whatsoever. I'm not sure I'd risk the EU pressing, as Optimal's quality can be really inconsistent.
After checking out the earlier negative feedbackβ¦ sorry you experienced that. It's common to find noise in new pressings. You've got to scrub and then vacuum clean at least. After that, you need to play it through with a deep-riding stylus that picks up a lot of leftover manufacturing fur. It's a bummer but necessary. Not many pressings, unless they're very early on the stamper bay, aren't affected. My copy, after cleaning it this way, is relatively quiet on the first pass. As for the differences in volume, when you read the liner notes, these tracks come from so many different sources that relative compression and loudness are bound to vary. I'm pretty picky about sound quality, but in this case, I didn't sweat it. Overall, this is one heck of a Neil record. A lot of his recent studio work has been interesting at best. This album is awesome from start to finish. I really love it. The packaging is very much Neilβcool cover art, a nice poster, lyric sheet. The inner sleeve art is great and reminds me of the acetate. I do prefer archival sleeves, so I added some. Wind up! Buy it!!
Didn't feel the Β£40 vinyl price for this song collection was fair, so opted for this instead. I already had most of these tracks, but the order and flow of this compilation work nicely together. It's well-packaged with a gatefold, lyric sheet, and inner picture sleeve.
This pressing is a real lemon, and no amount of cleaning, even with top-notch equipment, can salvage it. Side A is a mess, with static and distortion ruining most of the first two tracks. The third track starts off okay, but the distortion creeps back in towards the end, making it a frustrating listen. Thankfully, sides B and C are fine, but this is still going back for a refund. It's a shame because the album is great, but the quality control is failing again. I'd steer clear of this vinyl pressing and opt for the CD instead. Neil, you really need to sort out the quality control on your vinyl releases; they've been pretty terrible lately. You're giving us vinyl lovers, to quote one of your songs, "a piece of crap!" and doing it "over and over again." **Update: Four months and four copies later, I finally found one without the static on side A. There's no way to tell if you've got a good copy, as the stamper numbers are the same as the bad ones. Fortunately, sides B and C are perfect. It's great to finally listen to "Will To Love" without that annoying pressing defect. So, there are some good "made in Canada" copies out there, just 1 in 4 with my luck.
The noise on Side One of mine is so loud, it's kinda hard to enjoy the crackling fire in "Will To Love." But hey, I didn't pay much for it.
