I absolutely adore this album. It's one of their later, more rock-oriented, non-beach vibe records. It's so strange and wonderful.
Awesome stereo sound on this version! Look for the etching on side B, it says 237-1 then 1 next to the artisan recorders oval logo (two lines slanted from the center). Comes with a big, full-size fold-out poster of the front cover Indian and the lyrics that open up too!
By Tom PortThis pressing is absolutely amazing, particularly if you manage to snag a clean hot stamper! My copy is super quiet and boasts the most expansive, immediate soundstage in a vast acoustic space. The Tubey Magic is unparalleled—without it, you're missing out on something truly special. CDs might be clean and clear, but only the finest vintage vinyl pressings capture that magical Tubey Magic from the original 1971 tapes. The bass is tight, note-like, rich, and full-bodied, with just the right amount of depth. The midrange is natural, with every instrument sounding just as it should, offering incredible transparency and resolution that lets you dive into the three-dimensional studio space. Grab one of these original pressings if you can!
I've had to give SURF'S UP some time to grow on me. The first side is pretty good overall (except for Mike Love's "Student Demonstration Time"), but the second side is something else entirely – it's packed with some of the most inventive music the Beach Boys ever created. I'm really happy with this 1971 Santa Maria pressing; the bass is incredibly powerful, the vocals and instruments are rich and distinct, and the soundstage is expansive and detailed. My copy plays beautifully, clean as a whistle, with just a hint of surface noise at the start of each side.
Without a doubt, this has the finest sound quality in my entire collection. Those Reprise albums from the early to mid-70s consistently deliver amazing audio.
