Once you've moved past Pet Sounds and the vast lore surrounding SMiLE, you soon discover just how stunning and underappreciated Sunflower is (despite its critical praise, it was a commercial disaster). Naturally, this pressing sounds fantastic. I'm thrilled to finally have a pristine copy free from any distracting surface noise!
Growing up in the 70's, I was exposed to my dad's love for the Beach Boys, but this album was never part of the conversation. I only discovered its existence this year. I can only imagine how challenging it must have been for the Beach Boys to carry on as a band during the time this album was released, with so many new and evolving music styles competing for attention. Having listened to it once (I found a near mint copy of this version for $3 a few weeks back at a local thrift store - along with a ton of other stuff - yikes!), I think this might be my favorite Beach Boys album. I say might...because I'm still on the fence.
It seems like my vinyl record has a printing error, as both sides A and B have the Side B label on them. I've listened and the music is fine, so it's just the labels that are mixed up. I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this issue, or if mine is a one-off case.
I ain't come across an original copy, and sadly can't seem to locate one, but these AP reissue pressings are just about perfect.
This pressing is absolutely fantastic, and I've had the chance to listen to quite a few earlier and original versions. The only vinyl release I haven't heard yet is the analogue productions version. But, this one is really warm, rich, and clear with excellent separation. The only problem I encountered was the run-out groove on side two: on my copy, my poor stylus went straight to the center label. Apart from that, I'm really happy with this!
