  • Defective Vinyl Groove

    1 out of 5 stars
    setogubgiqOctober 17, 2025United States๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

5 stars for the tunes; but I picked up this vinyl around late 2019 and noticed that A4 โ€œI Mean Youโ€ had a manufacturing defect causing a locked groove. I returned it to my local shop and got a replacement right away. I got home and, wouldn't you know it, the same track was stuck in the same spot. I gave up trying for a third copy, figuring the whole batch with that stamper was probably like that. Looking forward to the Blue Note Classic Series reissue of this though.

  • Blue Note's Protective Surprise

    5 out of 5 stars
    kpenllipdAugust 28, 2025United States๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

I must commend Blue Note records (even if it's a tad belated) for including plastic lined paper inner sleeves in this release. The Plastic Protector Inner Sleeves themselves are top-notch, better than many quality ones I've bought and enjoyed over the years. Just the act of opening the cover for the first time and finding this nice surprise makes you want to take better care of the vinyl. That was definitely my initial reaction. It's a whole different experience compared to when you or I, the buyer, adds the plastic liner ourselves. What a delightful surprise from a record company actually considering the consumer and the long-term value of their most important product. For every one of these I come across, there are a hundred silly gimmick custom inner sleeve releases focused on fancy looks, not the job the inner sleeve is meant to do. I've lost hundreds of dollars in value on my collection items simply because LPs get scratched by dumb or cheap inner sleeves. Record companies don't seem to care. Don't seem to know or want to know. So I must thank Blue Note and highlight this wonderful addition to collectors.

  • Kevin Gray's Impressive Mastering

    5 out of 5 stars
    homagaxnuvJuly 22, 2025United Kingdom๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง

I must say, this album is absolutely amazing. The sound quality isn't top-notch, but Kevin Gray's mastering has such a wonderful touch. Truly impressive!

  • Muffled Music Quality

    4 out of 5 stars
    whalqinmyayJuly 13, 2025United States๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

The music on this record is fantastic, but it sounds like the speakers are covered by something. It's a bit muffled, sonically.

  • Skips on Side B

    5 out of 5 stars
    lukzgcoyuApril 30, 2025United States๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

5 stars for the tunes, but the record has 2 skips on side B5. Returning it.

About Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk, born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, was a pioneering American jazz pianist and composer, renowned for his distinctive improvisational style and significant contributions to the jazz canon. As one of the founders of modern jazz, Monk's unique approach to rhythm, space, and harmony set him apart, making him the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington. His compositions, such as "'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", and "Straight, No Chaser", are staples of the genre. Monk's deliberately quirky playing, which often challenges conventional notions of rhythm and harmony, might take some time to appreciate, but his brilliance as a composer and pianist is undeniable. Growing up in New York, Monk began playing piano at the age of five and honed his craft throughout his career, leaving an indelible mark on jazz history.
