Monk truly shone when playing alongside his longtime partner Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, with bass and drums rounding out the group. This album is a fantastic showcase of Monk's ingenuity, clever songwriting, and the sheer joy he brought to his performances. Standout tracks include "Rhythm-A-Ning", "Hackensack", and "Criss Cross". Rouse often mirrors the melody at the top of his range, which can sometimes make the tuning a bit loose, but it gives the band a unique, expansive sound that you wouldn't trade for anything. This mid-70s reissue is spotless, with excellent clarity, dynamics, and a great stereo image. I can't think of any improvements that could be made to this pressing. If you come across it, don't hesitate to snag a copy. 5 stars, highly recommended.
I must say, I'm over the moon that I stumbled upon this Pure Pleasure pressing for just $20, as I've been on the hunt for a great sounding version of this album for ages. Unlike some of their other releases that come straight from the analogue tapes, this one's sourced from a hi-res DSD master that was mastered in the UK from those same tapes, but trust me, it doesn't skimp on that warm, analogue feel one bit. Two enthusiastic thumbs up from me!
The audio quality is absolutely amazing...The dynamics, sound stage, and detail are on par with a Tone Poets.
To me, this album's tracks are as good as or even surpass those on Monk’s Dream. The remaster sounds fantastic!
Incredible new release. Dead silent and super dynamic. Just what you'd anticipate from Bernie Grundman and Pallas. But most importantly, the music is truly outstanding.
