Alright, let me just say this straight away: I don't own the UHQR, haven't given it a listen, and I'm not planning to buy it anytime soon. My reasons are pretty straightforward: it's pricey, the box is a bit too bulky for my shelf, and I'm not a fan of 2LP 45rpm records when there are decent 33rpm options out there. You might call it laziness, but I prefer single discs when I can get them. This Vinylphyle—ugh, I can't stand that name—edition of Exodus ticks most of my boxes. The sound quality is fantastic. It's mastered at just the right level and boasts near-perfect clarity, resolution, dynamics, and transients throughout. Joe Nino-Hernes deserves a big round of applause for his work here. The RTI pressing is impeccable: perfectly flat and super quiet. The packaging is top-notch, with a beautiful tip-on gatefold jacket and a really nice commemorative OBI (in my opinion, these should replace hype stickers entirely). If I had to pick a minor gripe, it would be that the disc was pretty dirty right out of the archival sleeve. Not a huge deal for someone like me who cleans every record before it hits the turntable, but still an annoying issue for a plant as good as RTI. They should probably address that. I've already seen comments saying the UHQR sounds better, and I don't doubt it. Chad and the team in Salina have earned their reputation for a reason. That said, I think this release offers way better value at just $40. Whatever I might lose in sound quality, I make up for in savings. I'd still love to hear the UHQR someday to see what I'm missing, but until then, I'll say this pressing is the best I've ever heard this classic album and it's now my go-to version.
I'm absolutely amazed by the incredible sound quality. There's a bit of surface noise on my copy, even after using spin-clean and a static brush, but considering all factors, it might be due to my setup or other variables. Honestly, it doesn't get much better than this—I just wish every record sounded this lively and full of life. Definitely worth every penny.
