Whether a review is positive, negative, or neutral, we always publish it. However, we screen every review to ensure it is authentic and free of profanity. These checks happen automatically, though a human occasionally steps in. We never pay for reviews.
Fantastic collection of Coltrane's 1958 tracks with top-notch packaging and booklet. The only downside is the poorly designed, tight cardboard CD sleeves that make putting the discs back a tense experience.
This set's vinyl version was pressed from digital files (it had to be done this way; using tape would've meant slicing and piecing together the original master reels from the ten albums these tracks first appeared on). I reckon this is where it's sourced from. Grab it.

This is an amazing edition from such a productive year! Craft Recordings opted for a chronological arrangement of the tracks, making it easy to follow Coltrane's journey to his final quartet and his musical explorations. As you progress through the year, you'll start to notice his renowned "sheets of sound." You can hear and sense the spark of his emerging genius and the realms he would delve into in the coming years. Realms that not all fans could keep up with... This linen-wrapped "album," featuring eight records and a 40-page book with notes from Ashley Kahn, is a true beauty! The vinyls are incredibly quiet and maintain the usual high RTI quality. Some of the records are a bit warped, but it doesn't affect the sound. And the sound is the best you can get from Coltrane on vinyl these days! Masterfully remastered by Craft Recordings. I know, it's from the same digital source as the CD edition, and some analog purists might have issues with that, but trust me - it will amaze you! Minimal background noise, every instrument is perfectly separated, and the bass is deep and rich. It might seem pricey at first glance, but what you get is worth every cent!
