Trane leading the pack with a stellar band of troublemakers diving into a sea of killer beats
this is an amazing live album from '63, captured in Berlin and Stockholm, with the band absolutely on fire! You can really feel the energy throughout. McCoy Tyner truly shines, and his piano playing is recorded even better than on Van Gelder's sessions. The only downside is that the bass is a bit buried in the mix. The overall vibe is much freer on all the tracks (though not as free as his later work), and the selection is spot on. Some of my all-time favorites are here, like the incredible "spiritual" and "afro blue". If you're on the fence, just check out the 21-minute version of "my favourite things" online—it's one of the best renditions of that classic tune ever!
Owned the double album for a while now, and it still amazes me every time. Absolutely adore it.
I frequently turn to this Coltrane record. The year 1963 was truly exceptional in Trane's incredible journey. This set of live shows from Europe is a must-have and can be quite easily found. I'd strongly suggest giving it a listen.
Contrary to what's stated on the labels, this is indeed a mono recording. I've got a transfer of this pressing, and it's clearly mono, as evidenced by the waveform and what my ears pick up. Check it out here: https://i.postimg.cc/NGbFQVF8/Screenshot-2024-02-02-at-12-33-16-PM.png
