Product description

Dive into the enchanting world of Harry Nilsson's "Aerial Ballet," a captivating journey through the realms of baroque pop and singer-songwriter brilliance. Released in July 1968, this third studio album by the American musician is a testament to Nilsson's unique musical prowess, offering a collection of 13 tracks that span just under 30 minutes. The album, pressed in mono, features a mix of original compositions and a notable cover of "Everybody's Talkin'" from the film "Midnight Cowboy."

"Aerial Ballet" is a beautiful blend of Nilsson's distinctive vocals and intricate songwriting, showcasing his ability to craft songs that are both intimate and universally resonant. The album opens with "Daddy's Song," a poignant track that sets the tone for the introspective journey ahead. Standout tracks like "Good Old Desk" and "Don't Leave Me" highlight Nilsson's knack for storytelling, while "Mr. Richland's Favorite Song" and "The Wailing of the Willow" demonstrate his versatility and depth as a songwriter.

The album's title, inspired by the highwire circus act, adds a layer of intrigue, suggesting a delicate balance and grace that permeates the music. Nilsson's ability to weave complex emotions into accessible pop songs makes "Aerial Ballet" a timeless addition to any music collection. The album's enduring appeal lies in its ability to connect with listeners on a personal level, making it a beloved classic in the canon of baroque pop and singer-songwriter music.

This is a 1980 Reissue Remastered released as a LP.

  • Worth Checking Out

I didn't think this would sound so great, but it really does. Definitely worth checking out.

  • Nilsson's Enchanting Aerial Ballet

    5 out of 5 stars
    BdLedeaSeptember 14, 2025United States🇺🇸

This is a 1969 version, but not one of the initial pressings, as it doesn't feature "Daddy's Song". Listening to AERIAL BALLET, words like 'adorable', 'playful' and 'delicate' spring to mind. It's an enchanting, fanciful creation, brimming with tunes, catchy hooks and smart arrangements, and Nilsson's voice truly was something special in his early years. The record sounds fantastic. I initially thought it was a Dynaflex when I spotted the orange label, but it's actually a heavier, deep groove pressing. There's a wealth of depth in the bass and a detailed, warm and immersive soundstage. My copy plays smooth and clear, with hardly any surface noise to speak of.

  • Analogue Mastering Excellence

    ScicNafOUAugust 9, 2025United States🇺🇸

Well-balanced, warm analogue mastering job. The pressing is nice and quiet, and the artwork stays true to the original.

  • Mono Magic

    4 out of 5 stars
    VudhiralJune 25, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

This Mono record is absolutely fantastic. The copy I have isn't perfectly flat, but it doesn't impact the sound at all. I don't usually care about coloured vinyl, but this one complements the artwork's hair colour nicely. On to the music - it's incredibly clear with fantastic depth, surprising width, and great separation. If I played this for someone and asked if they thought it was stereo or mono, I bet they'd say stereo. Cartridge: Ortofon 2M MM Mono.

  • Mono Warmth and Depth

The sound quality on this reissue is fantastic, it's got that classic mono warmth and depth.

About Harry Nilsson

Harry Nilsson, born Harry Edward Nilsson III, was an American singer-songwriter who captivated audiences with his unique blend of baroque pop and singer-songwriter sensibilities. Rising to fame in the early 1970s, Nilsson's music is renowned for its pioneering vocal overdub experiments, a deep reverence for the Great American Songbook, and a distinctive fusion of Caribbean rhythms. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Nilsson achieved significant commercial success without the need for extensive touring or public performances, a testament to his powerful and emotive recordings.

His discography is a treasure trove of memorable hits, including "Without You," "Coconut," and "Everybody's Talking," a cover of Fred Neil's song that showcased his crystalline vocals and songwriting prowess. Nilsson's talent was so revered that he was once cited by The Beatles' John Lennon and Paul McCartney as their favorite recording artist. His work spans multiple genres and styles, often blending nostalgia with innovation within a single song.

Despite his immense talent, Nilsson faced personal struggles, including stage fright and alcoholism. His financial troubles, exacerbated by poor management, added to his challenges. However, his legacy endures through his timeless music, which continues to inspire and enchant fans worldwide. Nilsson's contributions to music earned him two Grammy Awards, cementing his place as a legendary figure in the world of pop and rock.
