Don't fall for the crowd whining about this record being MP3s on vinyl. Granted, they took the audio from a digital master tape copy, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this is hands down the best way to enjoy this album. The sound is crisp and clean, and there's no noise between songs. Grab this pressing if you have the chance. And yes, the Use Your Illusion 2 reissue is just as amazing.
Possibly the greatest in "The Illusion" series. Own it on CD, yet managed to snag this fresh '180 gram' pressing for roughly 15 euro.
Man, it's crazy to think this album dropped 30 years ago. Since I missed out back then, I finally decided to give it a spin. The first five songs hit you like a ton of bricks, then we get a chill acoustic one. But don't worry, it's back to mosh pit material for the next three, culminating in their legendary November Rain. And we're not even halfway done! You're getting your money's worth, that's for sure. So many of these could've been massive hits. Double Talking Jive is an absolute standout. It's awesome hearing it for the first time, even though some of these got played to death on the radio.
This is a solid, clean, flat, and well-centered pressing, but it falls short on the low end. Plus, they didn't use 'vinyl people' materials—just paper inner sleeves instead of polylined ones. If this ever gets remixed, they absolutely need to bring Duff back into the mix. You can hear him clearly where he should be in the album opener "Right Next Door To Hell," but then he's mostly missing for the rest of the album. Another issue is that it sounds like it was cut from a digital source (that's what my ears and some logical thinking tell me), so the vinyl doesn't offer much more than the CD we all have. Still, I'm holding onto it in my collection until I can (hopefully) upgrade to an MFSL or AP cut from the original tapes (if they didn't end up as fuel for some archival fire). Downside: The inner groove distortion on "COMA" is pretty bad on my copy.
I've got both the 2016 and 2022 versions of this album, and I just finished comparing them side by side with "November Rain" alone. After listening to each version twice, I can confidently say there's a noticeable difference between them. The first thing that stood out to me is that the 2022 version does a much better job at centering Axl's voice, which really enhances the overall sound stage. Additionally, the 2022 version brings out more details in the string section during the intro, almost to the point where it overshadows the flute, giving it a bit of a remix vibe rather than just a remaster. All in all, the 2022 pressing is an improvement over the 2016. If you're on the fence about getting it, I'd say go for it, I'm really glad I did.
