Deciding whether this is a standalone album or a double EP is up for debate, but I personally view it as a distinctive double EP, as the band members have called it an EP since its 1988 release, with the Live Like A Suicide EP from 1986 making up Side One and the 4 new incredible acoustic tracks on Side 2. But no matter how you look at it, this is an outstanding listening experience, and this first press American version sounds phenomenal. The first 4 songs pack a powerful, heavy punch, while the last 4 offer a perfect contrast with a more relaxed acoustic vibe, even though, except for the beautiful country-style ballad Patience, the songs on Side Two still rock hard. One In A Million, despite the controversy, is one of GNR's finest tracks, with an amazing groove and Axl's voice shining. The blend of Slash, Izzy & Duff on acoustic guitars creates a fantastic sound, and Slash's solos are incredible, like in Used To Love Her. I've always thought these acoustic songs feature some of the best recorded acoustic guitars by a major rock band, they're just so well executed and the mixing / panning adds so much detail and depth. Anyways, this is a must-have LP, so if you come across one, don't hesitate to grab it.
The description mentions "White Marbled," but the one I received is plain white. Both the cover and the inner sleeve have glossy prints. I'd prefer if the "contains lyrics which some people may find offensive" sticker wasn't on the cover. Apart from that, I'm really happy with the physical quality of this release. The sound quality is pretty good for a fake. Even after cleaning, there's some clicking and popping during quiet parts. There's not much bass overall, and what little there is doesn't seem to match any instrument or vocal, just random low-end noise. It might improve with some EQ tweaking, but that's more effort than I want to put in. For about a third or fourth of the price of an authentic copy in similar shape, it sounds fine enough for me. All things considered, I'd give it a 4 out of 5.
Absolutely amazing album and vinyl pressing. Plus, it features a unique cover and inner sleeve. For any GNR fan, the first pressing is a must-own version.
While I can't compare this LP to another copy, the detail in this one is absolutely STUNNING. I've been a fan of this album since its release in '88, owning both the cassette and CD versions. But this vinyl LP blows them all away and is an absolute joy to play. It's definitely worth the price if you have to pay a bit more for it. HIGHLY suggest you give it a spin!
This European pressing sounds fantastic and seems to differ from the first US pressing, which I believe was DMM mastered. The audio here is warmer, and I'm really enjoying it. However, the US DMM version has a crisper high end. Both the European and US pressings sound amazing to me; they're both top-notch productions.
