Nothing unexpected here, except for the amazing knack to fit 30 minutes per side while keeping the playback sounding fantastic. MOV hardly ever lets you down!
Amazing audio quality! Compared to the original 1991 BMG version, this one has more depth, giving the music more room to shine. The new cut has been slightly opened up across all frequencies. The original album, on the other hand, sounds a bit narrower and compressed. Those complex, multi-layered early '90s recordings for 'Union' are quite a challenge to work with. Without access to and thorough remastering of the original multitracks, there's no other sound alternative to this new 2024 Japan 2LP vinyl edition.
This is a really good reissue. The audio quality and mix are on par with the original European version, not superior or inferior, but it's the complete album spread across two vinyl records. There's a slight groove noise between songs but it's mostly quiet. The speech at the end of "Angkor Wat" has a silent background. I encountered one three-click repeater, but apart from that, all four sides were flawless. The back cover is a replica of the original, so it doesn't list the last two tracks.
Audio quality is underwhelming. Expected more depth in the bass. It's quite mid-heavy. Probably due to a digital source. Sounds a bit squashed. Almost like an MP3. The CD version outshines this vinyl release. No "Wow" factor whatsoever. Wouldn't recommend this one.
Legend has it, Rick Wakeman dubbed this album "Onion"..... as it brought tears to his eyes! Quite the mixed bag, really. Thankfully, the 1991 Union tour was absolutely brilliant.
