This album is absolutely fantastic—it's truly one of my top picks. It perfectly encapsulates that experimental phase after Syd Barrett left and before they released what I think is their groundbreaking album, Meddle. For me, this record feels like a continuation of their At Pompeii performance. It's raw, unrestrained, and has a certain edge to it. I believe they had to go through a phase of deconstruction and purging before becoming the amazing band they ultimately were. This album is a bit of a mixed bag, but I'm really into it. It's a great listen, particularly late at night with some cozy lighting.
I'm fond of the overall design of this 8-track, but it's a bit of a letdown that it's an abridged version, missing quite a few tracks from the complete album, especially most of the live ones. On the bright side, I'd prefer the live tracks to be omitted rather than the studio ones. Plus, the track order is pretty good as it doesn't cut any songs in the middle.
This album was one of the most influential in shaping my musical preferences for many years ahead.
The description above doesn't mention "Var 2" Side D. My version (which is spot on with Sides A, B, and C as described here) has "STBB-4-388 W1" etched in the runout groove. That "1" is just a straight line, so it might actually be a capital "i".
I'm completely in love with this album. It's incredibly quiet when it's not playing. Pink Floyd at one of their finest moments.
