Even though Gira might not personally adore this album, I'm absolutely in love with it! It's probably not the best choice to play at a party, as Swans have definitely toned down their usual intensity to create this captivating snapshot of the late 80s/early 90s spirit. It's got that Leonard Cohen vibe, a touch of Dead Can Dance, a classic rock cover done right, some Christian themes thrown in, and a dash of that classic Swans hypnotic groove... boom! I'm particularly fond of Gira's vocal layering on Mona Lisa, Mother Earth; the slight 1950s pop feel of (She's A) Universal Emptiness; the Cohen-like The River That Runs With Love...; and the melancholy of God Damn The Sun. I can understand why fans still buzzing from Children of God might not appreciate it... and I just played Feel Good Now two weeks ago! Still, The Burning World is a Swans album that's less thunderous but still incredibly engaging. Agreeing with bertburroughs below, this particular pressing is fantastic! I've only listened to the CD, but it sounds amazing on vinyl. If you're looking for this record, this is the one to grab.
Without a doubt, this is the easiest Swans album to get into. It's actually quite catchy, which isn't a word you'd typically use for them. The 1972 – if26 reissue is fantastic. The cover art is top-notch and the lyrics are included inside. Plus, the 180gr vinyl is really high quality.

But that's what makes this album such a fantastic snapshot of the late 80s and early 90s spirit. You'll find echoes of Leonard Cohen, Dead Can Dance, a killer classic rock cover, some Christian themes woven in, and of course, that signature Swans-ian hypnotic groove... it's all here! I'm particularly fond of Gira's vocal layering on Mona Lisa, Mother Earth; the subtle 1950s pop feel of (She's A) Universal Emptiness; the Cohen-like vibes of The River That Runs With Love...; and the melancholic beauty of God Damn The Sun. I get why fans still riding high from Children of God might not be into it... I was just blasting Feel Good Now a couple of weeks ago myself! Still, The Burning World is a Swans album that's less intense but just as captivating. Agreeing with bertburroughs below, this pressing is top-notch! I've only heard the CD, but I'm sure the vinyl does it justice. If you're looking for this record, this is definitely the version to grab.
