Product Description

Swans, the avant-garde collective known for their intense and experimental sound, unleashed "Public Castration Is a Good Idea" on January 1, 1986, under the Mute label. This live album captures the raw, unfiltered energy of Swans' early performances, offering a unique glimpse into their evolving sonic landscape. Clocking in at just over an hour and thirteen minutes, the album is a relentless journey through a diverse range of genres, including noise rock, post-punk, industrial, and experimental music.

The tracklist features live renditions of songs like "Money Is Flesh," "Fool," and "A Screw," showcasing Swans' ability to blend industrial noise with post-punk sensibilities. The album's title track, "Public Castration Is a Good Idea," sets the tone for the rest of the record, with its abrasive sounds and confrontational lyrics. Swans' use of drones, repetitive rhythms, and Michael Gira's distinctive vocals create an atmosphere that is both unsettling and captivating.

"Public Castration Is a Good Idea" is not just a live album; it's a testament to Swans' willingness to push boundaries and challenge listeners. The album's experimental nature and raw intensity make it a standout release in the Swans discography, offering a glimpse into the band's early years and their ongoing influence on the avant-garde and experimental music scenes.

This is a 2023 Reissue Remastered released as a 2LP set.

  • Revoltingly Awesome Sound

The cover art and stuff might not be as fancy as other Young God stuff, but holy shit does it sound revoltingly awesome. If you ain't feeling like you're gonna hurl, you ain't cranked it up loud enough.

  • Volume Order

The 'play at max volume' on the packaging back ain't a tip. It's an order.

  • Heaviest Album Ever

    5 out of 5 stars
    Oesmora3922 July 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

Alright, let me put this out there as a contender for the title of "Heaviest album ever". I've listened to some seriously messed up stuff before, but this? This takes the crown without even trying. There's not a single familiar sound on this entire album. The drums and guitar blend into one monotonous noise, while the bass sounds like someone chucking chains around an abandoned warehouse. And then there's Michael Gira - may the Lord have mercy on our souls. He's undoubtedly the gloomiest and most bitter singer I've ever heard. His lyrics are a gruesome, psychological horror show. The album as a whole sounds like a series of controlled explosions with Gira wailing like he's in sheer agony. Which, knowing him, he probably is. This is NOT for the faint-hearted. It's pure misanthropy, despair, and hatred in its loudest, darkest, and most uncomfortable form. 10 fucking stars.

  • Vinyl Sounds Great After 35 Years

    5 out of 5 stars
    tpogmisg95042 July 2025United States🇺🇸

My edition features: Disc 1. Molded onto 116g of black vinyl. Disc 2. Molded onto 132g of black vinyl. Still sounds absolutely fantastic for vinyl that's approaching 35 years in age.
