An utter triumph. The arrangements are harmonious, stirring, whimsical and (particularly in the fifth section) akin to conjuring sonic cotton candy from the bare notes on the instruments. Vangelis was at his pinnacle; Blade Runner, Chariots Of Fire, Heaven And Hell etc might be more renowned but here I believe the artist comes nearest to 'squaring the circle' between the modest theme (tiny creatures) and his immense skill. Never does this sound exaggerated or subdued. A progressive electronic melodic ambient fantasy that still enchants me thirty years (and more) later. P.S.: Perfect for listening to during a thunderstorm, as I just did tonight....
Consistent with other Polydor editions of Vangelis' compositions, this one is remarkably quiet, devoid of any surface disturbances, yet powerful and so pristine with an astonishing dynamic range. The synthesizers sound profound, clear, and robust, particularly in the more bass-driven and percussive parts, never feeling overpowered or abrasive. This is a piece that demands repeated listening, and it only improves with time. The standout is the first movement, clocking in at around 15 minutes. It's hypnotic, filled with rhythmic repetition, but serves as a backdrop for numerous melodically playful nuances. This 1984 Polydor pressing is undoubtedly the finest way to enjoy this masterpiece. As of now, Ex++ copies are not too challenging to come by.

Far from exceptional, yet somehow pleasant, soothing and tuneful, I'm particularly fond of "Movement 4".
