Sounds fantastic on this pressing. The only thing that might've made it better is if they'd pressed it at 45rpm, seeing as it's spread across more than 2 records, there's definitely room for it. Side A of Record 1 is just Vangelis at his finest.
Could someone clarify if this is a fresh release from the disc or if it's a reissue from the original analog tapes?
I've had two sets of this record, and both times, the first disc in each set had a bunch of black specks or lumps of extra vinyl mixed in. One was so bad that it caused huge pops. The better copy had fewer lumps, but there were still some pops due to the specks. The second disc in each set was fine, probably because the excess vinyl was gone by the time they pressed the second discs. Anyway, it was a great choice to press this on four sides (though it could have been even better at 45rpm!). The mastering is clean and clear. Maybe a bit more EQ to boost the bass would have been nice, but the original recording never had a big bass like most of Vangelis' work. The packaging is... well, it's not great. Plain inners and a cheap-feeling single sleeve aren't very inspiring for the price. It doesn't feel like much love went into it. Still, the discs are (mostly) well-pressed and sound really good, and that's what counts!
Among the most overlooked gems in history. Vangelis's knack for blending tech with orchestral elements shines brilliantly here. The sound quality is flawlessly quiet, and the album truly shines when split across two discs instead of the original single LP. However, opting for a regular cover instead of a gatefold seems like a chance to honor the album was passed up.
This album is an utter work of art. I can't speak to the pressing or compare it to other releases. I'm simply immersed in its tunes, which seem like they were crafted by someone with an otherworldly bond to the cosmos. I wonder if this album would be more widely loved if the film had done better. If the movie turns into a series, as there's been talk of lately, we might see a more lavish package (a gatefold would be a nice touch) and extra content, like a poster or some liner notes (though this one only has two discs, both in great protective sleeves).
