  • Basement Jaxx's Eclectic Evolution

    5 out of 5 stars
    XjGaeckEwYqZahwo24 September 2025United States🇺🇸

It's been quite some time since their last release. From "RED ALERT" to "ROMEO," "RIGHT HERE'S THE SPOT," "RUN 4 COVER," and now "RAINDROPS," their newest album is sure to astonish you, no matter if you're a hip-hop enthusiast, house music lover, pop aficionado, or alternative fan, this album brings something fresh to the music scene. Longtime Basement Jaxx followers know them for their hip-hop/house roots. But with this new album, they've expanded their horizons. There are gains and there are losses. For instance, you'll find the usual hip-hop/house tracks, but also new songs blending pop, alternative, and world sounds. You'll encounter some unexpected guest artists that will amaze you. You might miss the famous interludes, but you won't mind too much. The album cover is the most unique, peculiar, yet truly representative of the album's collaborative spirit. The two new singles from this album are "RAINDROPS" and "FEELINGS GONE." "RAINDROPS" is the first song ever to feature a Basement Jaxx member on lead vocals, and it's incredible, as is the music video. "FEELINGS GONE," however, is more pop-oriented, and its video is a disappointment. This album could rank as their best, or at least second to "Rooty.

  • Basement Jaxx's Cohesive Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    xnauzpcoc25 June 2025United States🇺🇸

Basement Jaxx's albums have always been a bit of a mixed bag, with the "singles 'n' stuff" issue (or as some call it, "killer 'n' filler"). For every fantastic track, there's usually one that has you instinctively hitting the skip button. But with their fifth album, _Scars_, I reckon they've finally cracked that problem. It's surprisingly cohesive, and while there are a few weaker tracks, none are so bad that you'd question what the Jaxx boys were thinking. Sure, they've gone for a more laid-back vibe this time, but it lets their softer side shine. "Stay Close" might be a bit lackluster R'n'B, but the French vocals on "Distractionz" are sheer romantic bliss. The guest singers are particularly noteworthy: Santigold struts her stuff in "Saga" and Sam Sparro brings a high-octane pop feel to "Feelings Gone." Even Yoko Ono's trippy performance on "Day of the Sunflowers (We March On)" has its own unique charm. If you're after danceable singles, "Raindrops" is your go-to. But I'd put my money on the country-tinged "A Possibility" (featuring the one-and-only BJ Cole) or the underrated gem, the tender and beautifully understated "My Turn." Great job, lads: these are scars you should be proud to display.
